In issue 62 there is a letter about long cranks, and the response was maybe a defective check valve in the return fuel line. Where is this valve located, and is it fixable or only replaced. Randy:confused:

The valve is inside the overflow valve. It looks like a banjo bolt right in front of the fuel line into the injection pump. I don't think it is really fixable but it only takes 5 min to replace. Other issues maybe the o-rings between the fuel lines and the injectors or the gaskets in the fuel return line at the three way. Hope this helps.

I don't have the part #, but i just called a Cummins distributor and they knew what i was talking about. You will need the engine numbers off the timing cover when you call them. Randy

Cleaned the check valve and no help either. However, finally found the problem. Crankshaft position sensor would not give a signal during start attempt, therefore the ECM would not turn on the VP-44. With no signal during crank, no codes were set because the ECM didn't know the engine was turning. Had taken it to Cummins Mid-South and they didn't have a clue and lightened my pocket book by $225 for nothing. Therefore I looked at the wiring diagrams and description in the repair manual and went straight to the sensor. $35 later it starts great.
