I could use some suggestions for chemical degreasers. Powerful degreasers. My favorite (not that I've tried very many) is Gunk Carb + Parts Cleaner . Very powerful, but also very expensive ($25/gallon). I need a fairly large quantity, so I was wondering if anyone has any cheaper (possibly home-grown) solutions that are good at cutting grease.

Is Kerosene a good choice? I've never used it before, but it just occured to me that it might be particularly effective (and very cheap). Will soaking in Kerosene remove paint from metal?

i don't think kero will do much to the paint [depending on paint quality however]

see if you can get some caustic soda. . mix it with hot water and use it as the cleaning agent. .

diesel fuel makes a pretty good cleaner [you can use that filter drained stuff you don't want to pour back in the tank ;)]. . let it soak, and then scrub parts & powerwash it off.

Our shop uses ZEP Industrial Purple (home depot) and WAB Engine/Chassis Degreaser (local truck parts dealer) for heavy stuff on bus and truck engines just after a major oil leak or prior to engine work on an engine that has seen zero cleaning/maintenance. Basically both products are a very high concentration of lye and water and a little surfactant to speed rinsing.

you might try going to the paint dept in almost hardware store and getting some TSP

trisodiumphosphate (SP?)

use it with hot water great to degrease or clean up prior to repainting.

plus it's dirt cheap

I have been using Emerald Clean from gliptone, it's great on white letters and such. you can control strength by dilution.

good luck

If you want something that work well, use Laquer Thinner or Paint Thinner. The work very well as a degreaser, especially in heavy conditions and it is pretty cheap to buy it by in 5 gallon quantities. ;)

I mixed up 5 gallons of Simple Green at 1:1 and tried soaking some parts in it. It worked almost as well as the Carb & Parts cleaner at removing grease and paint. But since it's water based, it had a more corrosive effect on the parts [although I did leave it in there much longer than I should have].

best to watch the flamables

we use varsol in the parts washer, sems t owork as well as Safety CLean but I wonder about the potenial for a flash fire.

my parts washer solvent i run at the shop is 3 gallons of mac's degreaser concentrate from napa and about 15 gallons of diesel, it cuts like or better then varsol and doesn't eat your hands, and my favorite part it rinses off with running water with very little residue, with light to medium use i get about 2-3 years out of a batch before it collects too much oil to rinse off well and it really looses it's power. plus it doesn't seem to be any more flamable then diesel
