I have a 1 year old 2008 3500 dually with 4500 miles on it. When the truck is cold (sitting all day) and I head for home, the shift into 6th will delay sometimes for 2 miles. Maybe the lock up? Speed 70 mph and RPM about 2600. Do I need to let the engine warm up longer or drive slower or what? Never happens on my 5. 9 auto transmission.

My 09 does the same thing. The computer won't allow the final upshifts until the fluid reaches a certain temp. I just drive slower until it upshifts. Maybe someone with more smarts will be able to tell us the reason for this.

Another guess: It may be to protect the engine from lugging when it has not reached normal operating temperature. Under very light throttle the six speed automatic in my truck will shift up into double overdrive and engine rpm will drop to as low as 1200 or 1400 rpm once it's warm.

On the pick-ups the 6 speed auto won't upshift to the top gear(s) until a certain temp is reached. Harvey is right, once it is warmed up it will upshift and take the rpm down real low, I usually manually downshift to keep them up a litttle.

Just to let you guys know its in the owners manual. its to get the trans temp up to what dodge set it at. I have tried letting it warm up longer but it doesn't help i just take the longer way to the highway and the trans is warmed up by then.

We have a WINNER! The BEST way to warm up your vehicle is to operate UNDER LOAD conditions, but keep the RPMs down (under 1500 for sure) so you don't cause the lubrication system to force open the bypass in the oil filter due to cold oil. Ideally, you want to know how warm the lube is. Until the lube is around 100 deg F. it's pretty stiff. My new Chally has an oil temp readout on the EVIC. It's handy, believe me.

It is amazing how many answers can be found in the owner's manual that every one of us owns. If we weren't too lazy to go out to the truck, get the manual out, and read it that is.

Well, well... . You r right. BUT I did read the owners manual cover to cover twice, 2 times... ... But am an old guy and have a crappy memory. Thought all you young whipper snappers might have the answer. It takes me 2 to 3 weeks to read the darn thing... ... Thanks. You younger guys told me what I wanted to know and it goes along with what I thought... ... :)
