I had a Thread Deleted because it was to disturbing. My THOUGHT TO THAT WAS GOOD!!!!!!!!!!. I would like to take some time to explain something to the ones that were disturbed so please hang in there I'm no big time writer.

I posted a picture that when I did the wife was looking over my shoulder on the elliptical walker and she said it wont fly. I ask why? She knows me better than me and she said that people aren't ready for that kind of truth. Trust me when I say that the pic you seen WAS NOTHING to what the rest of them looked like I was disturbed by them but in my MACHO WAY I asked the SIL for some chunky salsa for my hash browns.

I have read post's on here about guys going to Alaska and Canada/Wy/ID and to my favorite Montana and that's fantastic. The part that I thought was kind of strange was that it was info about gas/road condition/ food/ camping and that's a HUGE part of it I enjoy it more than going. But something that I looked for was info on the wildlife? Maybe I missed it but I don't remember any questions about them.

I post pictures of my place up here and I still cant believe that I get to do this every day. Some of the things that are said are MAGNIFICANT/BUTIEFUEL/AWASOM/FANTANTASTIC and I agree but when I look at the ELK in our backyard or the Deer that I caught crossing our drive The FIRST THING THAT COMES TO ME IS WHERE ARE THE BEAR AND THE LIONS. I look at all those beautiful animals out there as a BEAR BUFFET and then look around to see if the guests of honor aren't around so I DONT END UP LIKE THE GUY IN THE PICTURE.

Its easy to sit in our little homes in our chairs and not think about WHAT IF I don't live in suburbia as most you do I don't have the chance to have someone explain HOW EVER DISTRUBING IT IS that maybe we should think about this before something like this happens to a loved one. I don't like to tell anyone HOW THEY SHOULD DO THINGS that they like. So I put pictures up and you can make your own decisions. I know that if I just wrote something that you should watch out for the bears you would just read or not and blow it off. OBVOULSY THIS GOT YOUR ATTENTION and that's what I wanted to do.

I have lived in a REAL WORLD from 18 years old as many Ive found have. I had and still have a problem with parts of my life that are to real sometimes. I told Harvey Barlow one time that all I did in Vietnam was work on airplanes and I didn't have to do any shooting well the reason was that I wasn't ready for the inevitable questions who/how/why Talking with Greg Harman and a man of the Cloth I have found some answers. So living in a REAL WORLD FOR ME is SHOWING YOU PICTURES OF REALITY and seems like some didn't like it. Well take it from me when you get in a CHITTY situation you cant click you ruby red slippers and pick up Too Too and say there is no place like home there is no place like home and be transported to KANSANS because MR BEAR DONT GIVE A I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER IN REALITY

Reality is Acceptable, Here!

BIG, Just to publicly acknowledge the fact that your post about the Grizz was RIGHT ON! No explanation necessary! GregH

I took no offense Mr. Big, or is it Mr. Nasty? I looked for it to show a friend of mine that had a close encounter with a grizzly.

Ya know how to tell the difference between black bear poo and grizzly poo?

Black bear poo is smaller, has berry's in it and maybe some squirrel fur.

Grizzly bear poo has bells in it and smells like pepper.

Big I for one wasn't offended. It happens, people need to know about it. Some citiots think wild animals are just like the ones in the zoo. Just not so.

It might of had more to do with the dead mans penis in the picture than mauling. Just saying. ;)

People who live in glass houses should not throw stones, so with that in mind, this is just an opinion, I am not chastising anyone.

If, that picture was one of my close relatives or even a close friend, I would be upset. If it were sent by private e-mail to another is one thing, posting on a public web site is another. It's even entirely possible, he could be a TDR members father, brother or son. I would guess that was TDR's stance.

A Wake-up Call!

Nick, I understand the concept and the reasons why TDR Administration could have pulled the Post. However, they could have just pulled the picture and left the rest of the thread. That still would have left the OP as "opinion"! The picture reinforced the point of the original post. But the entire thought process would still have been available!

The intent was a learning experience. A wake-up call to most folks out there who sit in their comfortable homes and are not confronted with the savage reality of the Wilderness.

Some who plan Camping trips for the Summer and have no Idea of what can happen in certain areas. Montana, Alaska, parts of Idaho, N. W. Wyoming all have Grizzly Bears as well as Black Bears. Mountain Lion and Wolves will round out the list of predators that can invite a Human for dinner!

Maybe you dont think a Black Bear is a threat on a camping trip or a hike? They are opportunistic feeders. If they are big enough and hungry enough, and you are in their territory, your it!

What do you do If you find yourself in Mountain Lion Country, on a hike and you are being stalked?

We have Mt. Lions here and a young Male will definitely consider if he can take you down!

We haven't even touched on two legged predators. That is another level of "shock therapy"!

A picture is worth 1000 words!

I have seen a lot of human tragedy in my life. If it was a member of my own family, I would consider the circumstances very carefully. If it would save the life of even one other human being, it would be worth it. GregH

Yes, I totaly understand the OP's original intent, the reason's were commendable. However, the picture was not his loved one, so it was not his to share. The impact may have been less had he just posted a link, with a statement of caution for any readers that clicked on the thread.

I can understand TDR's view point from a perspective of the general public. If the photo or thread went viral, I have a hunch the OP, TDR and the Montana Fish and Game would be front page news.

Personally I thought the picture a little on the gruesome side but I understood the point of it. We don't see much of that around Connecticut so it was interesting in it's own right.

The moderators have a tough job balancing everything out. I am a moderator on another forum and sometimes you have to make a gut call (pun intended).

I guess bottom line I'm neutral on this.

after doing some research and talking to some people that know where and who that poor individual is / was you have seen him if you watch any wildlife doc's and as far as what happened to him I have seen the same doc's and what he was doing living TO CLOSE to the bears was his own choice. Personally I THINK THE MAN WAS NUTS TRYING TO MAKE A BUCK ON HIS STUPIDITY. He got what what many thought would happen. He got to close and to relaxed with the WILDLIFE. Two hunting seasons ago I MADE THE SAME MISTAKE I was to relaxed in a job that I had done MANY TIMES and almost paid the same price NEVER EVER WILL THAT HAPPEN AGAIN.

On a side note the Deletion of the thread was done with grace and tact I have no problems with the way it was handled. YES I should have put a different kind of way to look at it but as we speak MY POINT IS STILL BEIENG THOUGHT ABOUT. When my kids were getting their drivers lic. I took them to the truck scales. I knew a guy that worked at them when he was a driver. I don't know if any have ever been in commercial scales but they have some scare photos on the wall. I asked my buddy to pull out the BOOK OF PHOTOS He asked are you sure? He did and I had the Kids look threw as much or as little as they wanted. Both took a look at about 4 or 5 of the photos and HAVE NEVER HAD A SPEEDING TICKET or been in an accident. My son got green and my daughter I had to clean up a mess BUT I GOT MY POINT ACROSS

Absolutely nothing wrong this.

I'm late to this party. I think I have a grasp on what's going on here. Maybe a schoch out of context, but still teaching to respect the wild. I remember a "South Park" episode (I no longer watch that show) where some radical "treehuggers" went to a south american rain forest to "help save it" and they got to really learn about the WILD.

The closest we have here on my little suburban island is a LOT of Deer. If you travel 45 minutes north and west you WILL see Bear, Coyote, and Mountain Lion. Many people around here are moving up there and leave their doggy on a chain in the back yard at dusk. Respect the WILD- I'm afraid of it.

Wayne

There is nothing to be afraid of with some common sense and you bought a Dodge with a Cummins I assume so you have the common sense gene. I have seen people that live up here do the same thing STAKE THE DOG OUT. That's inviting disaster. at least they will have something to remember what ever was on the end of the chain because it collar will still be attached.

People move into the rural area's and expect the wildlife that was there for ever to open up and roll out the welcome mat. Not going to happen. I have lost some chickens and 1 dog that just couldn't get it Thu his head that those are not the neighbors stray dogs (coyotes) and he paid a price for it. Sad yes mad yes but going to kill everything within 50 miles no.

Please don't be afraid you would be missing out on the best part of this God awful mess we live in called the WORLD. Next time your out and camping go to the Forest rangers or Park rangers and ask they are more than happy to help folks enjoy the outdoors. AND DONT MISS OUT ON SEEING THIS :D

Another OUTSTANDING PICTURE, BIG!

Wayne M. What you cant experience through a picture are the smells. The sounds and what you feel! Smelling Elk before you see them is enough to send my Heart racing! The sounds of the wind in the trees or a distant Elk Bugle, A Cow Elk calling. The feel of the wind in your face or the grass crushing beneath your feet as you listen, smell and look at the country. It can be a grand view or just a few feet in front of you. The vegetation being crushed in a symmetrical linear pattern indicating a trail. Fresh droppings, urine stench! Man !! Thats almost as exciting as My Wedding Night;):DOo. !

You can look at pictures! Thats GOOD!

Or you can get out and experience it! That is BEST! GregH

Without that i'm sure I would be dead I look at my savior every day when I wake up. NO ITS NOT YOU Greg

Hey keep those pictures coming. Now are those actual shots from your area? They sure look like the slips that come in the frames when you buy them... I'd love the oppurtunity to sample that someday. Hopefully the good Lord will afford me the oppurtunity. Maybe I shouldn't have said I was AFRAID- maybe overcautious. Reminds me of the last time I was in a remote area.

It was in Virginia and I was heading north on I-81 coming home from Florida in the wake of hurricane Irene, when I decided to hop off and see a bit of the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was my gang in the ram, and we were tooling along and really enjoying what we were seeing however a bit hazy or I would have gotten out and snapped a few shots. There were some photo oppurtunities with some dramatic drop offs and nice brooks and all.

This is about 6 hours into our banzai home and we were having snacks as we went along. There was a 12 pack cooler between my kids in the back seat with the lid off and were were having a grand time. I plotted my exit to get back onto 81, but I missed it and saw a ranger station where I could turn around. I whipped the truck in the bit of a narrow space and there goes the cooler- all over my Son and of course there's a lot of COLD water. DANG.

I jump out, open the back, unzip a bag and proceed to help him change in the cab doorway.

Just at that time I look around and see a sign reminding us about where we are and that there are a lot BEARS around. Just at the same time, I pick up the wafting smell of food just oozing out of the truck.

Suddenly it turned into a TV sitcom deal and I'm rushing him back into the truck Oo. I explained later.

Yes I over reacted, but that's how I am. No, we didn't see anything but we werent taking chances!
