Injectors??

I installed 370 injectors a while back. The truck runs stronger than before. It originally had the 180 injectors. Would I benefit if I installed larger delivery valves? If so, how much of an increase in power would I realize?

By doing the bigger nozzles, you are now asking the injection pump to flow more fuel than the stock delivery valves can deliver. This will cause a "canning" sound in the exhaust at part throttle and is due to the nozzles getting an uneven pulse of fuel. This will be totally overcome by the bigger delivery valves and power-wise, it will give you a broader band of power across all RPMs.

Well dang, maybe thats the knocking sound that I've been chasing. How much power gain is to be had with the bigger delivery valves over the stock 180's?

What I experienced in installing the 370 nozzles was a torque spike at about 1800 rpm that would cause the rear wheels to explosively spin in third gear. Doing the delivery valves effectively smoothed out this torque spike and gave the engine an overall increase in power across the entire rpm band.

Sounds like a winner to me. The engine does not currently have the miss at 1100 rpm that some have talked about but I could use more torque. I still have not broke anything so I guess I don't have enough yet #ad

Which kind of delivery valves is recommended for my set up?

Am I correct in recalling that the delivery valves are not as important when going from the 215's to 370's?

Would the cost be worth the difference?

dieselburner,
I don't know the answer on the delivery valves, but hopefully Joe Donnelley will step in here and give us the scoop. I'd like to know as well..... just ordered the 370's #ad

What is the HP rating on your #4 plate? TIA

The 160 hp pump needs the bigger delivery valves with 370 marine injectors. The higher hp pumps can benefit some, but it is not essential. I haven't done a back-to-back dyno test with the 215 pump but I expect with the bigger pumps the major gain is in driveability, not maximum hp.

For what it's worth, when my pump was out
and being warmed over, this question came up. The answer was that I didn't need them. The stock pump, (in a warmed over state) can handle the 370's with no problem.
And I can atest to the fact that my truck has an even throttle from when the boost comes on to redline. (my fuel bills show it too!!!) Just way too much fun... ... ...
I know I might get hammered for this posting but what the heck, everybody should be able to hear all the info available.
Right?? :), Maybe I just have a ABBY-NORMAL
truck.....

Ok Joe just what kind of driveability improvement are you talking about. The only thing I have noticed since the addition of the 370 HP injectors is a touchy throttle. A little throttle = more than it ever did before. #ad

I don't know what the plate is rated at. It is hotter than the #5 which I traded back to Mark at TST #ad
#ad
#ad
. It does develop noticeably more torque than the #5 plate and fuel comes on earlier in the rpm range. Mark at TST could fill you in on the rating if there is one now. At the time that I got the plate it was experimental and had no rating.

Bringing the question on driveability and delivery valves back to the top.

Joseph Donnelly,
You mentioned that "with the bigger pumps the major gain is in driveability, not maximum hp". Could you please elaborate on the "driveability" in this context with the BIG 370 INJECTORS. I'm trying to decide if I should go ahead and get the 'proper' delivery valves. I believe DieselB59 mentioned a torque spike at around 1800 rpm. Is this the same driveability issue you mentioned? TIA

The main diveability issue is a stumble around 1100-1200 rpm, kind of like a roughness or loading up from a big camshaft and dirty spark plugs in a gasser. Piers is out this week but check with him next week. He came up with these delivery valves, as with so many other toys we now enjoy #ad

Joe, Sickly and my truck don't seem to have this stumble at least I haven't noticed it. Is this a some do and some don't thing?

Here is the e-mail that I received from Piers on the delivery valve issue. I had sent him an enquiry to his home e-mail when I found out he was off this week. No rest for the wicked Piers! Thanks for the info if your following this.

Hi Steve,
Do you need the delivery valves... no, will they add more hp... yes
part# 1040180
We have sockets that one can buy or borrow, it's up to you.
