Delo 400 LE question

I do have the TDR issue that deals with oil testing and preferences. I have always run the older Delo 400 15/40 CI rated. I just bought a 5 gallon pail for $65. 00.
Costco has Delo 400LE 15/40 CJ rated on sale for $49. 99 for 6 gallons. I know it isn't rated as good as th older Delo but I change my oil every 4,000mi. Would you guys use it?

Yes, I would use it, especially with your short change interval.



I use Cummins Premium Blue (15W-40) CJ, made by Valvoline Its available at Schucks and Joes and I have used Delo 400LE from Costco once in an emergency.



I went to a Cummins ISB Service Training class in Nashville back in 1991 and the Cummins OEM Service Manager, Bill Stahl recommended (and explained why, but I don't remember all the specifics) the Premium Blue for all Cummins engines. I've been using it ever since I had my first CTD in 2001.



I change it every 3000-4000 miles due to my towing and also because its CJ, not CI.



I can't find CI, so I use the CJ...

No DPFs in 1991.

With a bit of effort, CI-4 Plus *IS* available.
Found Delo 400 at a Cummins dealer 11/08 - (5 gal pails).

That's in So. CA - where it (and Valvoline CI also) disappeared months ago. Cummins parts guy said it "re-appeared" in the system recently.

BTW - Cummins distributor could NOT come up with Valvoline Classic Blue CI. Said the part number is gone. Same for NAPA and others.
Valvoline appears to be "pushing" their Classic CJ and Classic Syn CJ.
IMO - simply because it's backwards compatible ("CYA"). . . . . And - the Syn brings in more $$.

IMO - even with shorter change intervals - think an oil analysis would be a good idea.
Be nice if you had a CI analysis to compare with a CJ analysis.

It's the other way around.
The CI rated, the older Delo, has a better additive package in it.
They still make the CI rated Delo 400 15/40 but you have to purchace it in 5 gallon pails or 55 gallon drums.

The Chevron Delo-400, 15-40, CI-4+ was considered to be an excellent oil & 'almost' comparable to quality synthetics. One of the things that they did when formulating the CI-4+ was the addition of Moly & Boron to the additive package. That created a robust motor oil. It was designed to handle the nasty stuff that comes from combustion of Low Sulphur Diesel fuel, especially the sulphur in the fuel.



The new CJ-4 oils are designed with the consideration that Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel is being used in the engine. So, they removed the parts of the additive package that handles the nasty stuff that comes from the LSD during combustion.



LSD is still available & I use it all the time. You can find it at truck stops. I, also, laid into a supply of CI-4+ so, I'm not concerned about the LSD.



There are things about the new CJ-4 that are better than the old CI-4+. The base oil is supposed to be of a higher quality. Probably some other things, also.



I've heard that "Backwards Compatibility" of the CJ-4 does work. However, it is recommended that you cut back on oil change intervals if you are running 'extended' oil drain intervals. I seem to recall going back to 5000 mile intervals with CJ-4 use. You should be perfectly safe with that interval, from what I've heard.



The new diesel engines are not designed to have to deal with high sulphur fuel use so, these new oils are constructed with that in mind.



I'm glad to hear that CI-4+ is returning to availability. Especially, in the Chevron Delo-400, 15-40.

I have been running delo since 2000. Have it in both of my trucks, that are used for hauling only. My 93 will go 1200 miles before the oil turns black. I have always changed the oil at 5k intervals in both trucks. I live way up north, in the winter I put one gallon of 10-30 & two 15-40, both trucks stay out side. In 2000 when looking for a oil for my cummins. I read about a big trucking outfit on the northern east coast that was involved in a big test on different oils lasting over a year, they also had cummins working with them. I don't remember the size of the fleat but the number of trucks they had was astronomical. After the tests they were so happy with the results from the delo oil. They said they didn't see an advantage in synthetic oil. Most of their trucks were day cabs and ran 800,000 to a million miles, so thats good enough for me.

That probably was the Delo-400 "CI" rated oil. I too have been real satisfied with it. I am talking about the new "CJ" rated that came out late '06. Not as good of an additive package as the old Delo.
