DELO 400 synthetic

I hate to ask this question, but I've searched and can't find a previous post with the answer so here goes. I have 22,000 miles on the truck now and am ready for my next oil change. I've been using Delo 400 15W-40W since the first change and would like to know if I should be using the Synthetic 5W-40W now that it's winter... ..... in SoCal. Coldest morning I've seen so far is 40 deg F. We're heading to the desert next weekend and will see temps in the 30's. I think the regular 400 is fine for lubrication, but want the best cold flow possible. I drained some cold Delo 400 out of my generator and thought it flowed like mud compared to the Mobil 1 I've always run in the gasser. Got me thinking about the mornings. What should I put in? I think what you are running should flow just fine for the cold weather you will see. Just think, there are guys in Alaska that use Dello 400! If you want to run a synthetic, by all means, go ahead. But, no, you won't require it.

You can use regular 15-40 down into the teens without harm, at least for the first 1,000,000 miles anyhow.

5W40 Full Synthetic in your neck of the woods probably is overkill, based on your info provided. I don't know what drain intervals you chose w/15W40, but the extra protection of the synthetic would be OK and a drain interval of 8k to 10k miles would make it cost efficient. I switched to Rotella-T 5W40 around 21k miles and run it year 'round with Fleetguard Stratapore oil & fuel filters every 8k or so.

With the number of miles you now have, I would switch to synthetic. Your warmer climate won't effect you in any way.

Regardless of the oil brand or type, 5W is always going to flow better than 15W. However, considering the fact that 40 degrees and even 30 degrees is not even the slightest bit cold by oil standards, there's no reason to spend more money on something that will reap minimal benefits.

Living in Alaska, I run 400 until it hits 0 degrees. Then switch to 5w. run that thru the coldest part of winter then jump back. I agree with other post, 30 degrees is not cold for the 15w. Stay with that. Prolonged periods below 10 I would switch, other than that, protect the motor.

With fuel prices high you may consider the benefit of a 5W for fuel economy. You will see about 3 to 5% better with a 5W.

GAllen. Lowest temp being 40???? It is -47 here today!!! I left the Ram at home today. BTW, I have Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 for winter here and it can still be a rocky start at sub-zero. Just my . 02.

In Tucson, some days in the winter it doesn't even get up to 70°. Oo.

As said above, the Delo 400 would be fine. If you really want to give your truck a treat you could run Amsoil 15w-40 year-round.

-30F here last night with -60F wind chill. Don't mind the cold, hate the wind. -4F in garage, decided to wait until zero so I can take my gloves off to work on truck.

lucky you... i was wearing a pair of sweat pants, a pair of work pants on top of that, a t-shirt, sweater and coveralls on top of them all and my legs were still cold today working [top was ok with the thick winter parka on]... the wind was gusting hard enough to nearly knock me down. the wind sock at work was standing out at 90° and the post it was on was bending around 2'-3' with the wind blowing. . and it was only around 0°F plus what the windchill added. . i hate winter
