Delo 5w-40

[Fish On]

Is it true? I thought I saw that someone on this forum said that Delo is making a 5w-40 diesel motor oil. I love the delo 400 15w-40 but it is to much for the cold alaska winters. Please confirm and if you live in AK let me know if you have found a place that carries it. Thanks!

How about Mobil1 Delvac1 5w-40?

That's what I use...

It's a full synthetic & would be great in AK. Do you know of any Mobil distributors up there? If so, they would have it.

The Delo 5w40 is not a true full synthetic.

If I lived in really cold weather I'd consdier the use of a Group IV/V synthetic oil. The pour points are much lower than the Group III.



The Delo 15w40 has a pour point of -38 and the Delo 5w40 has a pour point of only -45. Delvac One 5w40 has a pour point near 60 below.

Delo is a Chevron product, most Chevron oil suppliers carry it. Just bought two 6ga cases of 5-40 synthetic today, $58. 62 delivered. Syn Delo is also availible in 0-30.

Hey Bill where do you buy your delo 400 5-40. Around here they want $21. 00 a gallon. Under ten dollars a gallon is a great price.

Lee Weber did an excellent job explaining why the Group III oils (like the Delo 5w40) are not true synthetics.



Here is a quote from his post in the thread I had posted above:

"Chevron Delo 5W-40 synthetic is a Group III base stock oil like Castrol Syntec. It is made by severely hydrocraking conventional oil in order to convert impurities into paraffins. It is not a true synthetic like Amsoil or Delvac which contain Group IV and V base stocks that are made from scratch from smaller molecules. Group III oils are turning out to be cost effective competitors for the true synthetics. Because they are not quite as "pure" as true synthetics, they have certain advantages with respect to being able to hold additives in solution. However, they tend to have poorer pour characteristics at low temperatures and are not quit as heat stable as true synthetics. But they are far superior to conventional oils in these respects. "



The reason Chevron can all their Delo 5w40 synthetic is the same reason that Castrol can call their Syntec synthetic. When Castrol was first marketing Syntec as a synthetic oil there was some upset about it not being a true synthetic oil. The courts ruled in favor of the Group III Syntec being a synthetic oil.

Ron, I bought my 5-40 from Rocky Mtn Petroleum in Missoula, shipping would kill you to Dakota. Check with a Chevron distributor near you.

Finally found some Delo 5w40 around here. The case of 6 gallons was $86. 94. Distrubitor didn't have any in stock, said they had to order it and it would be 2 to 3 weeks

Our chevron dealer around here wants $21. 00 per gallon. Looks like I will have to stick with Delo 400 15-40 for $6. ?? per gallon at wal-mart. According to another thread I started it flows almost as good as Delo 400 5-40 and better than Rotella T 5-40 synthetic.

Delo 400 15w-40

I found Delo 400 at Wall Mart in Ga for $5. 72/gal. by the gallon. Was looking for something else and came across it. About a buck less/gal. than I've been paying by case. In a hurry forgot to ask case price. It was like day after Thanksgiving there yesterday.

Caterpillar also has a "synthetic" 5W-40.

This is a 1997 pdf file. I checked on the price last Fall, and it was $22. 05/gal. It is probably CH-4 / ** rated by now. I think its part #141-3339.

The CAT 5w40 is rebranded Mobil Delvac One (Cat say it's a little different, Mobil says it's the same).



For those members who cannot seem to find the Delvac One, they might try a CAT dealer.
