Deoderizing a freezer???

While on vacation last week lightning hit my parents house and tripped the breaker to their garage. The freezer was full of frozen beef, pork and about 20 pounds of crappie. Needless to say the smell was terrible after a week of being off. The freezer still works but it still smells after sitting outside with the door open for a week. Anyone tell me how to get the stink out?

Wash with bleach and hot water. After it dries, put several open boxes of baking soda in it and run it. I've had good luck with this in past.

X2 on the bleach! Might even put a small amount of soap along with it.

Ditto on the baking soda, however I recommend pouring it into large flat pans and setting them down in the bottom - gives more surface area for the bicarbonate to do its magic.



Baking soda dissolved into water is also a very good odor remover for washing stuff like ice chests and freezers. We have a Scout trailer for our pack and depending on where we go, some of the water jugs and ice chests may sit for months before being used again. If the people who cleaned them aren't thorough enough before packing 'em away, sometimes they can develop a pretty stout reek. Baking soda in water takes care of it every time.

Add charcoal brickettes to the list... . they will also help absorb the odors.

Strangely, I found that using baking soda in *hot* water can be a rather effective cleaning agent. I've seen it cut through many layers of floor wax, given time to work.

A half pound of baking soda in 2 gallons of hot water (use gloves!) will work wonders. Take your time. Get the surfaces plenty wet. And hot. And leave them like that for a while. Do it again. And a third time if you're anal. Then rinse. Most of the odors should vanish.

And you'll likely find that the odors will disappear once the freezer is cold again. But you still want to clean it out!
