2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Destroyed my dana 70

Some of you may have seen my wanted ad in the classifieds already but here's what happend a few weeks ago.



I was on a highway about 35mins from home when the outer axle bearing basically blew apart while i was going about 65mph, the driverside axle twisted and broke in half after it got extremely hot and melted, and it wore almost completely through the spindle and cracked the end.

What type of rims are you running on your Dodge? If they are not factory what is their offset? Surely you must have heard some growling from the rear as you were crusing down the highway? That is going to be one $$$$ repair on your Dodge!! Good Luck

Ouch! did mud get into the bearings? Did you find another axle ? I saw those muddin videos and i like the sound of those stacks

Race, not real sure on the offset of the rims but they are not factory. Over my tires, stacks, radio and the rain i couldnt hear a bit of noise comin from the rear until i felt it get realll loose. I pulled over to see nothin but a huge cloud of smoke.



Bkenny, ya mud got in the bearings and wiped em out. I did find a few axles but all the ones' in my area are extremely high priced. I found a few guys in IN and IL who i'm just trying to work shipping out with.

Thanks cat but i already tried there and every rear end they have listed is way too over priced.

You may want to check with your local bearing / driveshaft shop. I have heard of spindle repairs being done on heavy duty axles. Basically a new spindle is welded to the axle. If you find such a service make sure the axle is slinging the oil. Looks like an awful amount of rust which should not be present if there is oil.

Offset rims

If you are running non factory rims with positive offset, makes the tires stick out past the fenders, this will put too much load on your wheel and axle bearings causing them to fatique and fail. Axle bearings usually are good for 100,000 miles minimum if not alot more miles. Just a thought.
