Well, just like the Jeffersons "I'm moving on up" out of the 2nd generation and into the 3rd generation forums. I just traded in my 1996 dodge on a 2005 quad cab diesel HO with 10,000 miles. I have to say in 10 years they have made some changes! However, this truck makes a sound similar to a 1980's car with low octane gas. kind of a detonation type sound. Subtle, but noticeable under light to moderate acceleration. If you floor it you don't hear it(or the engine is too loud to hear it). I drove a new one with 200 miles and it did the same thing but about 50% less. Do you all have that same sound? Is it normal?

Diesels run on detonation(compression ignition), what you hear is normal. You just hear more subtle tones than you did in the second gen. The third gens use multiple injection events for emissions and to make them so quiet. This means you can hear all sorts of noises you could never hear before, and some of the noises are new but nothing is "wrong" with the trucks.

Mine does it too. Not as loud as the pinging in a gas powered car but more of a background noise. It's been talked about before on this forum. Normal noise.
