Un-ballanced propeller shaft - or Drive shaft

My fire dept got a new Pierce Pumper this past week. It has a detroit deisel 60 series 515hp engine. At an idle, it seems like the turbo kicks in and out. Is this in fact the turbo and if so, Why is it doing that.

are you sure the fan is not kicking on and off causing a load on the engine?. EGR detroits do do some strange things though...

the turbo on those engines is a garrett vnt i believe. maybe it is tightening down on the vains [which will cause the turbo to spool] to create some back pressure to make the egr system work?

It could be the Air Compressor cycling. (air system) Does it have Air Conditioning could be the compressor for that cycling.

It is the turbo and the reason it cycles is because it is a variable vane turbo. More or less like he said
