Could THIS be...

Diesel Motorcycle

I'm looking for an CA emissions compatible replacement for an older Detroit Diesel 3-71 engine. (92 HP) Granted, this engine is noisy, and before Penske bought it, "the most efficient machine for converting diesel fuel to noise. "

If anyone thinks they know of an engine candidate I would appreciate knowing about it.

i don't know if it's that bad the 3-71 in our 5 ton clark fork lift does good, now the 2-71 in the small clark... :-laf

DD 3-71 replacement

The application is for an aging (45 yr old, ±) crane on an offshore oil platform. The engine does not have that many hours, but has to be replaced due to emissions restrictions. The Longer-Term solution will be to replace the entire crane with a new electric one; but for now I am just looking for "short term" and to re-power it (if such a "drop-in" exists. ) Otherwise, the solution will be to retrofit SCR catalyst, engine controls, and other nonsense. This may the only solution. Because the engine is in a moving cab, permanent hook ups to things like compressed air and 110 VAC power are not (readily) possible.

I appreciate your comments... .

What does the 3-71 power? Is it a transmission, hydraulic pump or generator. I would think a 4bt or 6bt would work fine. The 6bt is the same length as the 4-53, if that helps some. Also if your 3-71 uses the SAE #2, 3 or 4 bellhousing, the hookup should be simple.

You could also check into Kubota or Perkins diesels. Their reps could probably help you find a replacement. We replaced a 3-71 in a Galion crane-cherry picker with a 4BT. We used this unit at a refinery for getting into tight places once in a while and a new crane to do the job would be too expensive. The conversion worked out very well for this machine.
