That's about how I feel on a bus. Sounds like some interesting training. One of my favorite parts of engine re-building is failure analysis.

Gotta' go meet up for supper, but I'll post these two for you. Tell me what block this is......I know and I was pretty excited to see the pair of them....who else does???

Exhaust Valve only engines!!! Blowers mount of top of the valleys and blow air into the cylinder when the piston is down.

12V71's or maybe 12V92's!

Snoking

Wow! I'm game for any tour like that. But you said core inspection- are they showing you what's not acceptable so when they reject for a reason, it's on you?
I'm suprised they still have anything to do with the 2 cycle engines still, but I guess there's still a market to support.
We had Payhauler off road dumps when the landfill was alive, that had 16V92's. A monster.

They still handle the 2 stroke cores even though MTU owns that division now. They disassemble, clean, inspect, inventory and prep the incoming cores. Any non Detroit Diesel items such as brake shoes, transmissions, rear axle chucks, etc. are forwarded to the appropriate vendor such as Meritor, Eaton, Spicer and so on.
This was at Plant #2. Today we tour Plant #1 where they do a lot of the actual rebuilding.

Ahhh, the old 2-stroke Detroit Diesel. The most effective mechanism ever invented by man to turn diesel fuel into smoke and noise. :-laf

Nothing like an old two stroke Diesel. Keep them full of clean fluids an they will just run and run and run.....

Keep oil inside was not one of their strong suits. Still a lot of 53, 71 and 92 series running in boats. Smog rules did them in along with high fuel consumption. As a kid we installed a Navy surplus 6-71 in our Sea Scout boat(USCG 38 picket boat). We change out a couple pistons and liners right in the boat and went from the 90 injectors to high lift 70's as we had melted down a couple cylinders racing(battle mode on the governor) to often with the local USCG 40 footer.

I drove a Titan 90 Chevy with a 8V92 from 76 to 79. Snoking

Mr Werner couldn't be outdone by the 12V71's so he put a 16V92 in his personal truck. You guys must have a great tour, thanks for the photo's!!

When I toured the Chief Seattle fire boat years ago, it had three 16V92's at 1000 HP each. It was been retrofitted now.

"The engine room has two MTU 10V2000 1,522-hp diesel engines that produce the same power output as the original three engines. The new MTU engines also comply with Environmental Protection Agency emissions standards. Furthermore, the tank room has increased foam concentrate storage, and the engine room has increased fire pump capacity as the retrofit made the fire pumps separate from the power plant. To accommodate the weight of the new engines, the sea chests' feature ½-inch wall thicknesses."

You can still hear a 3-53 or 4-53 in the woods from time to time. Until the mid 80s they were king of the hill in skidders and log loaders. Then along came the 4 and 6bt Cummins and Detroit became a dinosaur over night.

Changing planes in Detroit so I'll see if I can upload any pictures, got a half hour or so to kill...

The LAST complete ReMan 12V92 engine that will ever be assembled by DDRE sitting right here in the plant waiting for some little items..
