Ya Know Whats Comming Don't Ya???

Cummins 5.9L 12 Valve Powered Dodge Charger

I was reviewing pictures this morning. I think that I have enough to make a fairly decent write up. Do you want me to do that? It will take a while but pretty interesting stuff.

Here we are, four 16-17 year old Sea Scotts putting a 6-71 in the SS Ship. I am in the middle with my back to the camera. A Chrysler Royal flat head straight eight came out at that time, which had replaced the original gas thisty Hall-Scott engine.

When we replace the pistons and liners in a couple cylinders, we lifted the front of the engine on its own mounting rails that you see in the picture, with just one bolt on each rear corner of the Twin-Disc transmission. Nice "you can do it" learning experience for young kids in a small town America in the early 60's.

Mike; I have been away for a while and just saw this post. But I did not recognize the engine block since it was not a straight six and painted yellow. We did have some small throw away 8 cylinder diesel engines but I am not to familiar with them. Since they where not used in the products I designed.

Who owns Detroit Diesel now (parent company)?

2000

By 2000, Detroit Diesel Corporation was a dynamic and well-respected company within both the trucking industry and the investment community. In October of 2000, DaimlerChrysler, completed a tender offer for all outstanding shares of Detroit Diesel Corporation, including the 48.6% interest owned by Penske Corporation.
Following the acquisition, DaimlerChrysler consolidated various engine and other powertrain component activities (including Detroit and Mercedes-Benz industrial engines) into the Commercial Vehicle Division under a new business unit named DaimlerChrysler Powersystems. The new company brought together more than 34,000 employees and combined revenues of approximately $7 billion.
[h=3]2012[/h]100,000th DD platform engine leaves the factory floor, while axles, Virtual Technician, transmissions and Detroit Genuine Parts are introduced.

Detroit Diesel Corporation is an affiliate of Daimler Trucks North America LLC, and is known simply as Detroit to encompass all engines and future products.
Through its corporate headquarters in Detroit, Michigan, Detroit has become a global leader in the diesel engine industry, manufacturing a complete line of heavy-duty diesel engines, axles and transmissions for the on-highway and vocational markets.
Detroit supports its complete line of products through a nationwide parts and distribution network, including 800-plus authorized service outlets in North America.
Detroit also has six remanufacturing centers strategically located throughout the United States, along with three worldwide parts distribution centers.

The old story is that Major Motors at the beginning of WWII created these diesel engines, he was quickly promoted to General Motors! It is my joke(or I heard it as a kid) and I am sticking with it! SNOKING

A force to be reckoned with. Now they offer auto shift transmissions, axles and drive axles along with engines.

For those that have never worked on these engines, they were a marvel of engineering for their day. Most of the blocks are symmetrical end to end. A 6-71 can be turned around to a mirror image left hand engine with less than one handful of different parts. The blower is symmetrical on and on. The fuel pump in the 6-71 could be reversed by removing two plugs and installing the spring a check ball from the other side, on and on!

To add to Snokings info here are links to the 4 common V configurations and the 8 inline configurations...pretty damn good engineering in my opinion!!!
