2001 1500 4x4 question

It's a real bread n butter engine. The 4 cyl version is what powers nyc mta local buses for the last 25 years. The only con I can think of is the change of DD ownership and the commitment for parts.

series 60 is is my favorite engine and the one I'm certified in. Love them. What year? I also worked on the city transit buses with the 4cyl versions in the bus world.. Easy to fix engine.. Stay away from anything with an MBE4000.

Heck Yhea! I don't like ANY MB engines! And what I was trying to get across, I don't think DD is what it use to be. And Big, stay away from ZF trannys!

No MB's.

DD is fine, the new DD13, DD15 and DD16 global platform engines are doing great. Seriously.

But the simplicity and durability of a pre-EGR 60 series can not be beat.

Have been looking and as far as I can tell the Pre-EGR motors are from 2007 and older? am I correct in that assumption? Looking at many different pieces of used equipment and trying to figure out what is what before we return home then fly to FL for a closer look at most of what is for sale. Most are low mileage (under 500k most below that) When we return and fly down to FL will be taking a Mech. that knows what is what. But until then we are looking at different ideas. Spending time in Las Vegas RV park for a few more weeks before return to home and go from there.

For some reason I'm thinking '04 and back. I will check in the morning to make sure.

I'm in the office too much nowadays and have forgotten a lot of stuff now that I don't work out on the customer and service counters anymore..........

Mike.

Just to give you an idea of what we are talking about, One of the reasons Penny and I came down to Vegas was to look at Class 8 RV's. We brought her Fathers bus down to stay awhile and see about the RV's. The guy next to us in the RV Park is a salesmen for high end Coach's, we have just been talking to him about things. He is the one that said 07 but he wasn't for sure on that either. He has many coach's that he has at his disposal for sale. One is what he is driving and for the same price as a NEW Class 8 with exhaust treatment that I WANT NO PART OF REALLY you can get a whole lot more coach and these are VERY WELL taken care of most with low mileage as you can see. He's not trying to push anything just throwing out ideas, This is a very easy style of RVing to get use to.

We always have the mules and tents for the other aspect of RVing :D

You can set the parameters for the years and go from there or just scroll down and click on whats available Most dont give much in-depth info on the mechanicals but he has been with his office getting what he can sent for information on specific interests

'07 is pretty much when the emission EGR/DPF garbage started. 2010 is when they added SCR. These are gov regs as im sure all of us know. Before that its a crap shoot as to who had what device.

2004 model year was when they added egr in a truck, I would assume that a coach would be the same. Maybe that would vary a little more in a coach in that the engine could be a model year older than the body. I would think that an egr engine with lower mileage you wouldn't have too many issues. Look for any soot buildup around the variable vane control shaft on the turbo would be a sign that the shaft is worn.

My 2000 Freightliner had the fuel sipping 12.7 series 60. I never had a lick of trouble with the engine for what it was made to do in the oilfield.

Have been told to get an 07 and older, the EGR is not a problem can be deleted for under $200 bucks, get a better turbo and a Bully Dog
http://bigrig.bullydog.com/product.php?ID=72

The automatic transmissions ALL HAVE ISSUES !!

In factory form the Series 60 is fine with what was put in Prevost's in the years mentioned and are BASICALLY the same transmissions just some better parts different programming and model numbers. With the addition of the Bully Dog and better turbo and EGR delete the main problem with the transmission becomes more prevalent. With the addition of an extra 100 HP to the already 450 HP, JACK RABBIT starts from the stoplights is a fast way to do a rebuild. They will hold up for a time but wont take it for long. He suggested easing into the throttle if that's in the drivers VOCABULARY? until it shifts once or twice, from then on it will have no problems holding the additional HP. The transmissions that Prevost used were for a driver with no knowledge of how to drive like a human being. Most put them in gear and mash on the long peddle. This is fine in stock power, when on a hill the average RV'er will just let the trans up and down shift and this is fine, but one that could pull his head out of his A** would put the transmission in Manual shift and select a gear that the engine isn't running an RPM that its wants to detonate or lug it down so low that it beats the bearings out of the lower end. When time comes for a trans rebuild things can be done to HELP the lower gear problems but NOTHING will stop them from occurring with a Jack A** behind the wheel.

This guy went to the same school of Congeniality as I did, he don't think much of drivers and says so. He's pretty sharp on Prevost motor home drive-trains

Thanks for all your thoughts on this, we are heading home tonight at midnight, Nick I wouldn't count on 65 MPH AVG, on this run. ;)

SO GET OUT OF THE WAY.

Mine is an 07 with the mb engine. No complaints to mention. A couple of times a bit more power would be nice but for the load, 23k horse trailer it did fine. power was ok but in the smokies headed to nc from texas a bit more would have been fun. I still was able to out pull all the motor homes and semis.

Made it Nick, The annual migration of the Interstate 15N Road Gator was NOT in full swing when we went thru. I always hang back a ways from the Big Strappers with the Big Trucks, bigger CB radios and BIGGER MOUTHS I let them plow the way. Just watch them for any sudden swerves or break lights tells something is in the road. Most times the speed that they run on the road is plenty.

Did a little better time wise but nothing to write home about. Did get to see some very nice seat covers in St George, They thought that they could pull away from the Bus when they figured I had seen enough, Cummins to the rescue!!!! Its nice to have some HP. Of Course Penny wasn't to happy with the seat covers :-laf

Need to get a BIG PORCH LIGHT to welcome them ;)

S-60s were EGR since Oct, 2002. EGR was revised with a couple changes in '04. '07 S-60s saw DPFs and DDEC VI computer. DDC stopped building S-60 at the end of 2009. Dont see S-60s with exhaust fluid SCR .
