07 Dodge Sprinter delayed

Friend of mine has the Duetz air cooled triple in a Waldon excavator. Apparently it has a blown head gasket on one of the cylinders. I understand there's a trick to shimming the cylinder for valve clearance after you swap gaskets. If so, is there a trick a regular guy with tools can do to solve this? Thanks.
 
There is no head gasket. The head has to be laped in to the cylinder by hand

with laping compound, like you did valves many years past. The head is then adjusted with shims on bottom of cylinders. To get the clearence between the piston and head you use a piece of . 065 solder in the injector hole and turn the engine over by hand to crush the piece of solder and measure the crushed end with a mike, the clearence should be about . 035. The head is not torqued, threads are streatch threads meaning they are in degrees.

Before you pull it apart check the clearence between the piston and the cylinder head, with some solder it has to be lead solder to get the correct measurment. Streach threads are measured by the strengh of the thread and not by the force of the thread, at some point the threads will go over center and will strip. Before removing the heads mark the head bolts with a referance point with a Verithin Silver pencil used for marking blue prints. The shims on the cylinder should not change unless you replaced the piston or cylinder. If the head is leaking just remove it and using a fine laping compound lap the head in until it even all the way around.
 
What model motor is it? If it's a F3L912' it does use a head gasket. The solder thing for checking clearance is correct. Gaskets come in different thicknesses. Be sure to check the gasket surface where it blew to make sure it didn't get burned.
 
I have not worked on a Deutz since college but you do torque the heads in 3 stages the first stage you use a 1/2" drive ratchet and shocket and hold the ratched at the head and tighten as tight as you can about 28 lb/ft of torque then two more stages of degree torquing i have forgotten how many degress for the last two passes.



ALL bolts streatch when torqued in there active length from the head to the threads. I work on steam turbines and I have to calculate the streatch of some studs and then convert to inches or flats of rotation for the milwrights when we assemble the turbine or valves.
