Howdy folks, A friend of mine reported that while filling up, an older gentleman with a '03 or newer Ram/Cummins pulled into the filling bay next to him. Prior to filling up the guy pulled out a bottle of Dexron ATF and dumped into his tank then proceeded to fill up. My buddy questioned him about it and he said that he had done this for years as he'd owned many diesel trucks of different brands over the years and felt it kept the injectors cleaned and lubricated and that he had never experienced any problems doing so. I haven't been brave enough to try it myself. I would think that it would screw up the cat converter on the newer trucks, but might provide lubrication for the VP44 on the 98. 5's - '02's, Then again diluting one quart of ATF with 35 gallons of diesel, I wonder if there's enough in the tank to make any difference at all. Any arguments for or against are apprieciated.

'98. 5, 200k, 2500, 4x4, reg cab, ez edge (just quit working) boost elbow, straight piped, FP gauge. still on original VP44 with fingers crossed.

Not recommended. IF you feel you need an additive for your fuel, go with a quality additive froma quality company that is designed as a fuel additive. There are a few threads on this, if you do a search you'll find a lot of info.

That seems more like a BIG NO NO for another reason though... it tints your fuel RED, and I am sure the law dogs are really going to believe you when you tell them "really, its not Ag-Diesel, its ATF!!!" "Yeah right sir, here is your 10k dollar fine for a full tank!!!

poor sap

when my friend told me this story my first thought was 'that poor sap has a nice '03 ram and he's slowly killing it. ' I never even thought about the red tint in the Ag diesel

yup, I know for sure I would NOT want to be him if his tank got dipped. You could fight it with a fuel analysis, but I dont think you would win, as they could say you tried to cover it up with the ATF. Over all, BAD idea!
