Re-winding awning?

5th wheel hitch install 02

Just took delivery on new flat bed with Dexter dual tandem w/electric brakes. When verifying wiring under trailer I noticed the electric brakes were not hooked up.

There are two wires at each wheel, I am assuming one is Positive and one is negative.

Question one, witch is witch?

Question two, can I splice the negative to the common negative in the wire loom?

Thanks for the help

Don:

There is no polarity on the trailer brake magnets, they can be hooked up either way. Yes, you can splice into the common ground on the trailer. Use a secure (i. e. soldered) connection though... . DO NOT use connectors such as ScotchLoks!

Don, just make sure your ground wire is of sufficient size to handle the brake current which will probably exceed 12 amps. Also I recommend running #8 marine wire for your brake wire. The marine wire is very flexible and each strand is tinned for increased protection from salt spray. FWIW.

Most electric brake systems will pull about 3 amps per wheel - use that to calculate load - make sure you use a good 10 guage wire ir better main line to the wheels, and from one side to the other to keep voltage/current drop minimal... Like mentioned above, crimped-on connectors WILL soon corrode - solder is best!
