My '97 has developed a little louder "ticking," which I'm assuming may be a sign of impending lift pump failure.

I thought it might've been the valves, so I adjusted them. Other symptoms include a greyish smoke under light throttle that I haven't seen before, and what seems like slightly less power. Not a huge difference, but seems noticeable.

Any thoughts on diagnosing lift pump or overflow valve problems without a gauge?

we are in the same exact boat. ticking, grey smoke, and less power.

i went ahead and ordered the overflow valve beins they arent that costly and if it doesnt fix it you have an extra for when it does go out. i am wondering the same thing you are.

what do the lift pumps go for anyhow? ballpark.....

not pirating the thread just adding to the people who want to know part.

i went to the cummins dealer and picked mine up for $159. i have read others that have bought them fom ih dealers and paided $100 but you have to take a part off of the orignal lift pump and swap it on the new lift pump.
