Need some Professional advise! Putting the getrag back together and instead of doing all the measuring and subtracting to get your shim pack dimensions, has anyone just used a dial indicatoR with a magnetic base instead? This is what we did for the counter shaft, still have to do the input shaft tomorrow. We stood the transmission on end, then set up the dial indicator (also used for checking runouts) on the top. Then sticking a pry bar through the PTO cover and prying up on the counter shaft assembly, thus coming to . 006 preload by adding necessary shims. Does this seem feasible, has anyone else done it this way?

This a great idea, and I will be using this method as well for my current getrag rebuild.

I wonder if it is coincidence but I spoke with Mysteryman earlier this week and he recommended using the exact same procedure rather than using the depth gauge method on the TS housing.

Using the indicator would eliminate errors in other measurements and in the calculations. Also easier to master than feeler gages.

Will produce more consistant and reliable results.

Thats good..... because the getrag is finally done. We got it stuck in yesterday and ran her thru all the gears in the driveway. So far -so good!
