Never thought of 78 being the muscle car era, I thought that ended around 1972.

I always thougth 78 was the "spaghetti under the hood" era :(

But they sure are nice looking trucks. :D

I think they were all 360 police engines, no big blocks ;) I always kinda liked those trucks :cool:

My understanding is that the LRE was a holdout from/throwback to the old muscle car days by virtue of being a truck rather than a more-regulated car. Completely primitive by modern standards, but a surprisingly powerful vehicle for the late '70's.

Actually, they were 360 powered. They made them in '78 and '79. The '78 was considered to be the better year (I think they had less emmissions than the '79). If i'm not mistaken, they were the fastest production trucks made (pre SRT-10, of course). They also made a black model - called the Warlock. I think there were less of those built - at least I know I've seen very few Warlocks. One of my high school buddies had a '78 'Lil Red. He narrowed an old 8 3/4 rear I had and went somewhat prostreet with it - including a gear drive cam for the whine. I believe he still has it. Pretty cool truck.

Lre

An old bud in St. Louis still has his. Neat rig, 360 powered, hardly any smog crap on it. Trucks were exempt, or nearly so, then. It was the fastest new vehicle sold that year,1/4 mile wise. The Warlock was only a trim package. I saw/rode in one that had a slant 6 with a stick, cheapest package Dodge sold, drivetrain wise. Doug says most of the decals are/were available when he redid his. Very impressive for a stock gasser P/U. It would/will eat a NEW Hemi Ram alive. DK

I had a 1978 Jeep J-10, 7' bed, AMC 360, T-18 4 speed, and Dana 44 axles. I think it would be a classic now. I wonder if I have pics anywhere.

The warlock was the Ply version of the truck. They were 360 C. I. only. It was the police engine with a few small mods doen to it. They were fast. But the 1/2 ton 454 Chevy pickup was faster in the same year.

If I remember right the 1/2 ton Chevy was the fastest production based vehicle for about 3 years running around then. Not counting a vette.

i drove one of those 78's back in 1983. a builder friend owned it. i have wanted one ever since. unfortunately the one i drove back then, got traded away in a bankruptcy dealing about 5 years ago. i had offered to pay cash for it before that time for many years, but the guy just didn't want to sell. :{

it was an unbelievably powerful truck and is responsible for the "lil red" portion of my user name.

I had a new 1973 Dodge Adventurer SE with a 360-2BBL that would eat a new Hemi alive too. The 727 Auto would shift out of 1st at 60 and 2nd at 115 - all I had to do was select Drive and put the pedal to the medal.

First new vehicle I owned was a 78 LRT, had the red bench and wood trim like Galen Govier said they never made. Car&Driver did a test of the fastest 0-100 vehicles of 1978 and it beat em all, 2 friends of mine had 78 z-28's a 4sp and an auto, both 350's the truck could show both of them the wood on the tailgate but by 80 they would be reeling me in, slick it wasn't.
