Good question? I thought all Cummins powered 2500s were the HD trucks. As I am looking at my 1996 Dodge Ram brochure (you know the one you get at the dealer when you are looking at trucks) the Cummins powered 2500's are HD's.

You got a HD,all Cummins trucks are HD,if you want to check, look at your door tag-the GVRW will be 8800 lbs, thats the HD 2500,BTE the Ld 2500 is 7500 GVWR.

It could have a 8800# rating, but still have some light duty parts in it. Most common is the transfer case. There is a NV241, and a NV241 HD. If it has a provision for a PTO, it's the heavy duty one.

One thing I do know that may not be HD is the transfer case. Some member have reported not having the 241HD T-Case in their trucks. Seems odd, IMO, that some of the HD trucks did not come with an HD T-case, but the std. 241.

there used to be a non HD 2500, smaller frame, same Tcase as the 1500 (a 204 or something).

they did away with the non-HD 2500.

the 241 Vs the 241HD, is a $50 option that is standard on the 3500. But there was very little difference in the max ratings. Someone had dug them out once. Either transfer case exceeds the ratings of the truck. Sure have the 241HD is cheap insurance. I wont argue there... the 241HD was made to power a PTO while still doing the service duty for the truck.
