I just passed 15k and changed all my fluids including the transfer case. Everything I read regarding the transfer case capacity says it should hold 4 pints (2qts). However, in order to fill the case to the bottom of the fill hole (untill fluid started dripping out of the fill hole) took about 5 pints (2. 5qts). The amount of old transfer case fluid in my drain pan was about 2 qts (refilled the bottles of the replacement stuff).

Did I overfill the transfer case? Should I have stopped at 2 qts regardless of level with respect to the fill hole?

Comments?

Mine took just about 3 quarts (probably 5. 5 pints). I don't care what the manual says, I filled that thing up until it ran out the fill hole just like you did.

Don't give it a second thought. Absolutely no harm will come to your transfer case.

I intentionally overfilled my transfer case. transmission too. (but not engine oil)

So, triple ditto.

Amsoil Synthetic universal ATF. However, since it is just a gear box, Ive been wondering why Redline MTL would not work. I put MTL in the 6-speed at 15k and it shifts a little smoother.

Just done mine about two weeks ago, it held 2. 5 qts to run out fill hole. First time with 28K miles on the clock. The old fluid did look a little brown. I went back with the Mopar ATF+4. Probably change it out sooner next time.

Quntiple-diddle-ditto. I just filled it till it ran out of the hole - about 2. 5 quarts of Amsoil ATF. The first time I did mine was 30k and the fluid was also kinda brown/burnt up. I decided to do it every 15k since it's so easy, and now at 45k when I drained it, it looked brand new coming out (amsoil atf). I wonder if either the extra 15k or the original factory fluid being crap contributed to the brown burnt up fluid.

If you read the manual on the ATF+4, it says that color can not be used to determine its condition, as it has a brown tint to it out of the bottle. SNOKING

I was going to cite that, Snoking, but I couldn't remember where I read it and I didn't want to be wrong.

When I changed mine out at 39k I thought the fluid was in excellent condition and didn't really need to be replaced. No metal, no burned smell, good color.
