First off, what a bugger to take the cooler off!! i have more skinned knuckles... anyway
There is a spring (that runs from the servo mount above the cooler that controls the exhaust valve), well mine is broken, i don't see what that was even used for. . any ideas?

Also are there adjustments for the cables? one seems loose and the other is pretty tight...

The threaded ends of the two cable housings are the adjustment. Loosen one of the nuts, which one depends on if it's loose or tight, and adjust the tension with the other. Tighten the first nut as a jam nut to keep things from coming loose.

As for the spring, my only guess would be that it connects to the pulley to keep the valve in a particular position. There's a small hole about the size of a spring wire just above the ring of dimples in the top half of the lower pulley.

DO NOT adjust the cables. It is an adjustment you should not touch

yea. . about that. I went into the house to get my buddy and i a refreshment. . came back out and he had them loosened all the way up and half of the stuff off. . this is why im asking how to adjust them.

Oh ****!!!!! We have been told don't touch. The spring as I recall is there for assy purpose only. The best I can recommend is to look at another truck like yours and try to duplicate setting and hope it does not trip a dtc

Will do, I have taken it for a couple of 15 mile runs, no codes. Im going for a 160 miler today. thanks Bob4x4

I spent a good half hour last night in Cummins trying to find out if there was any manual calibration or cable adjustment for that. I believe that is called the EGR bypass valve and it seems to be sold as a unit only. Nothing in service regarding it at all.
As Bob says you will be fine as long as you don't set a DTC.

If you do set one in the future I would lift the hood on a sister truck and try to match that adjustment, then take it to the dealer to calibrate it for the electronics. You might get away with not having to replace it that way.

If that doesn't happen and you keep motoring along have a beer and give thanks, you dodged a bullet.

Mike.

I'm approaching 60,000 miles. I'll probably need the EGR cleaning sometime in the next year. I'm getting too old for this crap. What is a "normal" price for having this done?

Well knock on wood everything is seeming to work perfect. No trouble codes and 175 miles today.

I am just guessing that the Dealership will charge you for at least 4 hour of labor. . just a guess. Geno's garage sells the erg stuff, all the gaskets and what not.

cables and pulleys to operate the bypass valve??? What is this, 1958? Might as well have put a slinky in ther under the hood as well... oh wait, they did, thats the spring!.

I have to admit, my lack of presence on these forums is pictured here:

When I took mine to the dealership because the turbo went out and needed to be replaced they would only do it if I did the EGR cleaning with them for the warranty. It cost right at $1000. 00 dollars to have them do this. I really had no choice since I needed the turbo replaced and the warranty would cover it. May be better just to do it yourself.

my spring is broken also, did you replace the spring? Also how did you get to the 15mm nut that hold's the EGR cooler onto the exhaust manifold, the one near the head?
ron

The spring is so you can take off the butterfly valve and control without damaging the cables or control. When it comes off the truck, the spring takes the load and not the cables.

I sent you a pm. I used a 15mm crows foot. The stud came out. The bolts on the front and rear studs were cross threaded at the factory. Pulled the studs right out.
