Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Cold weather problems

OEM alternators are typically cold rated. The cold rating is taken at or near maximum vehicle RPM. When the alternator heats up it's ability to produce power is reduced. I think it's a near 30% reduction in power when hot. Important to keep in mind when comparing apples to oranges.

Normally the alts are only 125 amps if they are stock. I know, I know, they call them 130 and 140's but they are not. At least up to 98. 5. After that I'm not sure.

So was mine, 135 amps but it isn't true. Stock ones are lucky to get 125. That is why I bought a new 200 amp alt from "Mean Green" in PA. Beautiful direct drop in alt. Fantastic alt with 3 year warranty. Only thing they exclude in that warranty is racing. Cannot beat that.

Good thing no one here races then. :-laf

Mean-Green's alternator is fantastic. I have had one since last June on my truck because of the extra load on the electrical system(FASS,Flex-A-Lite's,stereo). WD was the one who pointed me there way back when I was looking and it is one of the best buys I have made. The quality of their product is easy to see once you get it and the fact that it is a bolt in part is fantastic. Thanks for the reccomendation WD... . Andy

Here is the thread with a shot of it mounted on my truck.

Don't we have a fusible link in our trucks that's only rated at 125 amp, matching the stock alternator? I had the impression that just dropping in an alternator that provided higher output would blow the link and you'd be dead in the water.

you would run the snow plow pump motor direct off the battery and not thru factory wiring. Just like your house has 200A but you only draw what you need. The factory harness is for factory load and if you add high draw items and don't go through the fusible link you can still benifet from a larger unit? and not melt the wiring.

I don't think that we have fusible links on the 2 gens, at least the 12vers. I know mine doesn't. Unless they have it hidden really really good. I've had my 200 amp alt on for about 3 years now. Nary a problem. Of course I've converted the headlights to bi-xenon projectors and the rest of the truck to LED's except the 8+ million candle power lights on the front of the truck.
