No, let’s not take a trip back in time to review the “Twilight Zone” with Rod Serling. Rather, let’s take a look at the latest "Did You See The One" diesel-pickup truck-related headline from the past week:

"New Ford Super Duty Has 500 HP and 1200 Torque”.

Yep, last Thursday (10/27) the folks at Ford introduced a new high-output version of their 6.7-liter Power Stroke engine for the 2023 model year.

It is interesting to note that the numbers are better than those announced by General Motors for the 2024 model year (470 hp, 975 torque). Maybe GM should have announced their 2024 numbers a little later in the news cycle?

Actually, with product planning and emissions testing, these ratings take so much time to develop. And, with all the secrets that are hard to keep in the Detroit area, well, how did GM miss that Ford would steal the thunder?

Regardless, 500/1200 is a long way from Ford’s first F-250 in 1983 with the naturally aspirated 6.9 Navistar engine at 170 hp/315 torque.

Where will it all end?

It's somewhat astounding to see pickups with this kind of power. Do you remember when OTR tractors were running under 200HP and a big powerful tractor was 250HP? And how many pickups now require a Class A license to begin to use their towing ratings?

I was 20 years old and my dad had just bought a new 1990 Dodge D350 dually Cummins. We were on a trip back to San Diego from Bakersfield pulling our 24 foot Eliminator boat up the Grapevine on I-5 and we listening to the truck drivers on the CB talking about that pickup that was hauling butt up the hill and how amazing it was. The Grapevine is a long 6% grade. The Cummins was the game changer in the diesel pickup market. Now if only we didn't have to deal with the smog crap ruining our trucks... one can dream!

Well I guess that is one way to make up for short comings… I towed 24,000 lbs a few times back in the day with my 89. 160 Hp an 400 ft/ lbs did just fine. Without traction control these new trucks are in drivable. Too much torque too soon.

99 24V ISB SO 215HP at the flywheel, Automatic so figure 15-20 hp loss to the wheels. Still did the job at the time.

Now they just have to make some…

The HP wars are going to end soon if Diesel Fuel stays so high in cost. Sadly this means a page out of the van fuel miser playbook. 4 cylinder turbo that can’t get out of its own way. You know the work vehicles you get out of and the only way you consider anything from the manufacturer of the van is if you bounce off it running away from the van dropping it off for service.

160Hp isn't much for the grapevine. I've got 91-93 trucks with that rating and know how they tow.

I have problems with power with my near stock 91-93 models when towing my 24" gooseneck flatbed with a backhoe or a bobcat grossing 26-27000lb GCW. Recently had to get a push from another bobcat to get my rig out of one of my driveways when my 65 couldn't climb the grade towing a bobcat. One of the 400+ HP rigs would be much appreciated, but not the price.

HMMmm - looks like they caught up to my '02 2500 - mine did just under 500 HP and 1000 tq at the rear wheels with bigger injectors and Edge Comp. Sure made great towing with our 24 ft 5er - and the 17 mpg in mixed mountain and level towing was great too - even more welcome now with horrendous diesel fuel prices - well over $5 a gallon locally. With a full main tank and the added in-bed 50 gallon tank, nearly $500 in fuel - sure glad I had both tanks full when all this started. Makes ne wonder what the rear wheel power rating is on the new Ford, and what MPG they get. also, how the out-the-door cost is, compared to the $32K I paid fof mine.
