I have a 2004 2500 yesterday it died while at idling but it restarted with no trouble. Then I went about a mile & it died again & this time it was harder to start. Then after a couple more mile it died & would not stay running. It would start but die when you put it in gear. I felt like it was not getting any fuel. Since I always carry a spare fuel filter I thought I would change it to see if this was the trouble. After changing the filter I never could get it to prime back up. You could hear the lift pump running but It was not pushing any thing.

I'm guessing lift pump

What if you keep the filter drain open and see if you get a bunch of fuel spraying out when you crank it? (Or does somebody else know a way to easily check lift pump output?)

I would bet to say that the LP is shot. On the 02. 5 and later, they will not run with a bad LP. Saves on the VP44 from crapping out, though. Replace it and I would bet to say that it will run like a champ. the only reason some of these trucks won't run is due to fuel problems. With the HPCR trucks, they just die without a LP running, as the injector pump will not suck fuel itself. Now, in my era, such as the 98. 5, I've had my truck run like a champ with 0psi on the fuel gauge. the VP44 will suck fuel, but eventually burn up.
