E250 4x4 5.9 Cummins Conversion

I am not a mechanic

I would rather not use the L-10 because it is 500lbs heaver than the 8. 3 but I am having a hard problem finding a cheap 8. 3.

Would a Cummins small cam 855 work for you? 425HP Call Gary @ 402-689-0974. I seen this baby advertised on a farm site with no price. Chris

The small cam 855 is big and heavy, also obsolete. The were used in class 8 sized trucks from about 1962 till 1977 when the big cam took over, very similar to the small cam.

Well, just got back from two weeks on the road working our Cummins stores in the west.

Now over the T-Giving holidays, I will get some pictures posted.

What is planned:

I have 3 ISL engines in the garage, and making one. Wha I thought was a good engine was not, and had to get more parts. Hate it when I actually have to buy stuff. Taking a block that was donated from a "secret" source at the factory, a ISL 400 RV engine, that had a low mile failure (abuse), and a ISL 330 cement mixer engine that ran out of oil and building one.

I am only missing a couple parts for the Jake Brake mounting, but should have the rest.

These ISL's are a neat engine. Roller Cam, 7 Cam Bearings, Liners that are easy to swap, and more. Hmmmm... Maybe a dragster with one of these?? A little heavy. Maybe a race truck? I seriously think it has potential for a neat Gen 2 repower, just put the radiator in the bed, and then plenty of room.

More later.

Scott i'd try to swap one if you can find one affordably. give me a shout when you can about the SAE 2 adapter, I left my phone # on your voice mail @ work. If I could round up some parts I'd like to do some work on my truck over the turkey holiday. If you need a step a fetch guy to lend a hand call me, i'm interested in your conversion

Here are photos of the engine build-up. First the block, and then the block with mains. Also, a blurry shot of the ISL roller tappet:

Then the (nearly) completed engine, right and left sides. Then the truck, getting templated for thee firewall clearance measurements. I ma going to lift the body up 3" off of the mounts for more clearance for the Jake housing.

Scott, can't tell if they are crack-cap rods or not, but is this a CAPS motor or an HPCR (CM850) engine. Just curious.

Huh? 2 piece steel dome pistons? Show us how those go together!

Thats wild.

Steve

The piston top and the skirt are held together by the wrist pin. Very strong and very easy to work on.

As you saw in the photos, not a CAPS engine, but a HPCR. And what is interesting is that I have some of each of the rods. Some cracked cap, and some serrated. The engine I built is all serrated. I do run the cracked cap "B" rods in the dragster. Very strong, and consistent in weight.

AS a matter of fact, building the mounts now, and finally sold the old CAT on Ebay for $3000, so it will fund the transmission purchase.

I am going to work on it over the NY holiday, so should have photos soon for the tdr boys...

You can see the home made mounts for the flywheel housing in the last photo above, and here are the frame mounts for the rear.
