I am not a mechanic

And how does it run? Well, at 75 MPH, in 8th gear, it rips. Kick it into 9th, and hang on. The Jake will slow you down like 2 exhaust brakes. Now for a trip with the trailer to see if it heats.

Where ya at Scott?? Hope you didn't have troubles on your way to IRP... or did you change your mind on taking the trip?

Spent too much time on the truck, and not enought getting the dragster done. Had to stay home. Doing testing locally.

By the way, took the truck bobtail from the house to the shop, 25 miles in traffic, 65 MPH, got 15 MPG!

On the way home with the trailer, got 8. 5 MPG. The old CAT got 5-6 at best, and half the power. Sweet.

The Road Relay shows instant MPG, and Cumulative.

scott im looking at a possible isl swap. as I want a engien brake and i have acces to a couple of detroits 6v53 and 6v92 with jakes but the fuel mileage might not be as good as the ISL... etc. What is the cut off for the isl. I know they made em back in th elate 80's and early 90's ,and in 2003 was the common rail hpcr... was the older version like a L10 with a pt pump?. I know they weigh about 1500 lbs how tall and wide ?. If I found a donor wreck . . basically grab the wiring and ecu?. . how hard to upgrade to higher HP?. . and if you want to go above the factory rating how hard and available are the parts to do so?

Thanks, It looks good any other updates and mpg figures since its been on the road?

Sounds like you are confusing the ISL with an L10 celect... L10 celect and celect + were nearly identical to an M11 or what is called the ISM today, the ISL is much closer related to the ISC engine, the first ISC and ISL engines were CAPS pump equipped, the newer revolution is HPCR, and IMHO, 10x better than a CAPS engine

The ISL is a upgrade of the 8. 3 C engine, and was first released with a CAPS pump, and not near the reliabilty or the featured of HPCR. The old L10 that is discussed is a old design that evolved into a M11 (11L) and then to a ISM that we still sell. Good engine but big and for class 8 trucks.

Find a ISL, HPCR, (one on ebay last week!) and you will be happy. The CAPS pump ISL is OK, but make sure that all of the fuel system upgrades are done.

Put a Jake on it, and you will be happy.

What a ride! Just got back from a round trip to SEMA - Vegas, and not a lick of trouble!

7. 5 MPG, 75-80 MPH the whole way.

If you want a tow rig, consider the ISL! With a Jake!

It is so quiet running through the muffler we have thought about having a dump valve. Something to wake up the natives at 3AM.....

Well, the truck repower made the latest issue of Diesel World, thanks! There are a few more photos and a complete story on the repower.

I will scan it and put a copy out on our website as soon as I can.

By the way, we are doing some more work on the truck, too, a new wet of round aluminum tanks, and a stainless spoiler to help the areodynamics and MPG.

I will keep posting pics on this version of "Trick my Truck"...

i just came to the computer to find this thread and say what a cool article it is and it's already on top, neat truck and great job

Wicked cool. Mabye ill pick up a copy of diesel world now. I hope the limo will get 10mpg with a b series. How much does that truck weight in at?

Sbentz:

at 7. 5mpg, is that better, the same or worse than before with the cat?

Also do you have more power?

never mind I just read previous posts...

Awesome repower

The 7. 5 is when running 75MPH. The CAT got 4-5 and was only good for 65 in the flats and 20 in steel mountains. It is unreal on power. You get spooked, as it just keeps pulling.

Just a quick update on the BIG RIG! Doing great. getting 9. 5 MPG and just put 22. 5 tires and wheels on it. New fuel tanks. 200 gallons.....

Picks on the web site.

More here soon.
