I phoned Diesel Dynamics to find out which metal they

used to make their fuel pin. They "don't know" which metal

they used. Has anyone had better luck? If so, can you give

me details on how to get my fuel pin hardened?

In the meantime,I've taken the DD pin out, turned the stock

pin almost 1/4 turn clockwise, turned in the power screw,

not sure how much because the collar "accidentally" fell off

while i was grinding and prying on it. I would still like to be

able to use the DD pin without ruining it.

Those lock collars must be made out of the same mystery metal that DD used. A lot of people have had them fall off for some reason. :D :D

Well, if you (we) get desperate enough to find out the material, I may be able to get it "spark tested" in our company's metallurgy lab.

What they do is put it to a grinding wheel and make a small divit while observing the spark characteristics. While not 100% precise, it should give enough information to learn how to properly heat treat it.

If you need this done, let me know via PM... you will have to ship it to me in Ct.

I'll spark test mine later. I'll use a high speed die grinder to reprofile it. :D

After that then I'll figure out what kind of steel it is. Or if I get lucky someone else will find out by then. I would think a good case harding would do.

Too bad about you guys are having prohblems with you rpins. While the one I had didnt increase top end fuelling, It did help the bottom and mid range. THe one I got had been hardened. It was shiny just like the stock pin, but with a different curve. Seemed just as hard. Since DD doesnt make them any more, I doubt they want to get too involved in consumer compaints about them. Hate to badfmouth them, I think they sell some great stuff. I just think they could be a little more concerned about the older trucks we own, and support for their products a little better, even if they are discontinued.

There does seem to be some inconsistencies re: hardness

On the other hand you should keep in mind that these kits were out way back when... ..... as in Wayyyyyy back when. . :)

I sorta caught the "tail end of the discussion" so to speak back when I first came across TDR. . some years back.

It doesn't surprise me that "they" can't remember.
