I called Dynojet this morning, and found out they have 14 kits on the shelf they want to get rid of. I told him I'd do what I could do to help him out. THey retailed from DD for $150 (DD no longer makes them) and he would be willing to sel them for $80 or so if I could get a group of guys (and gals, as the case may be) interested in them. I had a kit in my 93 W250 a few years ago, (have since sold the truck) and got an extra mpg or two with 2800 psi injectors and a leaking pump. THis is a kit with a different cut on the pin taper, and a different AFC spring. I'm not trying to take business from Old Smoky and his new AFC design (see thread in this forum) but I thought I'd put the info out there about the DD discontinued parts. (Should this go in the discontinued sub forum?) Dynojet part# is 89931. I plan on getting one, and one from Old Smoky, and seeing which truck does better ( as far as changes, since each one is set up differently).

They also have 400 or so torque plates for the 2nd gen trucks, and are willing to clear them out at similar savings.

The stock fuel delivery rate pin, plunger, eccentric, whatever you want to call it, is not cut "deep" enough to allow the AFC to perform to its full potential. A modified or revised pin allows for more fueling.

RBergman,

The taper we are referring to is under the AFC housing, or the miniature UFO on the top of the pump. THere are 4 flat screws that hold the cap on. Under that is a diaphragm about 3-3. 5 inches wide. On the bottom of the diaphragm is a pin about 1/2 inch in diameter, and 3 inches long. (I am remembering this, no scientific measurements), with a an offset taper about halfway down, and spreading out toward the bottom. There is a second pin inthe pump that rides along the taper; as boost increases, the diaphragm moves down, allowing the pump to feed more fuel to the injectors, and thus produce more power. The stock pin is adjustable to an extent, and as Old Smoky said, it limits the amount of fuel the pump can put out. BY contrast, the DD pin I had in the 93 was made to minimize smoke. In other words, it builds quite a bit of boost before increasing fueling. This is good in high altitudes, and for towing and maximizing mpgs. However, if you are into performance, and dont care a lot about smoke, it may not be for you. I plan to get one as soon as I sell my next load of hay.

Hope this helps clear a little mud into pea soup.

Confusion

Guys,

NOt to be rude or inhospitable, but I am not affiliated with Dynojet; I do not have any kits in stock, nor do I plan to. The $80 or so if we can get enough people interested to clear out the inventory. Otherwise, I, and a few other people have been quoted at $110 apiece. Hope this clears up a few more questions you might have.

confused

I should understand this better before I spend my money. By delaying fuel delivery until boost increases(I thought the two were interrelated) is the engine "bogging down" off idle? If I turn the stock pin for the richest setting and I still do not get smoke am I getting as much benefit as the revised pin? I do not want to lose any power at low rpm nor do I want any increase in smoke.

I got your PM HFletcher.

RDBuck,

Fuel delivery and boost are interrelated. I think what dpuckett was saying is that boost is built before significant fueling is available. This would mean that low-end fueling would be about the same to minimize smoke, but allowed for more mid and high range fueling to increase power. So, the engine wouldn't "bog down," but remain about the same off idle. You would have more power when the RPM's are up. You will not lose any power by switching to a revised pin. You are not getting as much of an increase by just turning your stock pin to the "richest" setting. The pin needs to be modified to allow for maximum AFC fueling. If you feel that you have too much smoke after switching to a revised pin, the pump can be adjusted using the "star wheel," and/or "smoke screw," to reduce low boost fueling.

Does this make sense?

fuel pin

Thanks for the reply Old Smokey. This is all beginning to make more sense to me. When I had the 16 turbo and my pump turned up a little I had smoke on start-up and heavy smoke on hard throttle especially as the rpm's wound to max. I switched to a 12 wastegate and the smoke was virtually eliminated at all throttle speeds. The 12 improved the driveability of the truck up to 65mph but above that it does not cruise as well as with the 16. I like the responsiveness of the truck with the 12 to the point where it far outweighs the loss over 65mph. With more fuel being delivered with a revised pin will the situation be even worse at higher speeds? There must be a way to have the acceleration of the 12 and the top cruising speed of the 16 or 18-I just have not found it yet.
