Here in "downstate" New York, diesels over 8500 GVRW have to pass diesel emissions testing as part of an annual state inspection. My question is this: If I start "bombing" my '92, will it still pass the test? I'm thinking it won't, but I'm not sure. Anyone have any experience with it?

NY Diesel Emission Testing

I am a licensed NYS DMV inspector, and frequently inspect diesels in the downstate area. Your ability to pass the 40 percent opacity test depends upon the modifications you perform to ypur truck, injectors, pump timing, fuel screw, etc. The newer modified electronic trucks use a hidden valet switch to cut the fuel in order to pass emission tests. My 93 will not pass the emission test with POD injectors, and other upgrades, however the truck is registered under 8601 pounds. My suggestion is upgrade as you can but consider you may have to go back to stock parts on the truck near inspection time. Hope this helps... ... ..... Rick.

I have not done this, however the following would result in limited fuel pushed to the injectors.

Control cone to leanest

Smoke screw out nearly all the way

Full Fuel Screw, backed off

Governor speed screw adj. limited throttle

Starwheel up to top.

I would say you could taylor the above (over the years) to pass the test(s) with limited amount of adjusting/re-adjusting once you know what it takes to pass.

Most everyone knows the first gen's are near gutless in stock power form. Heck, the general population thinks you have to have a V-8 to tow anything. All I see is HEMI adds. It would be no surprise to the inspector if it tested with very low throttle response/low rpm's.

Most de-tuned diesels test with an opacity of like 8 on a scale of what... ... ..... 40? See what it takes to get near 40 I'd say.

That's what I'd do..... happy I don't.

I passed the CT emissions test by simply rotating the fuel cone to the min position. I easily passed.

My son took his hightly bombed 94 thru about a month ago... it passed as well and he didn't change anything.

A friend of mine with a highly bombed 96 disconnected the boost line going to the pump... . and he easily passed... so that may be another option for you.

Hope this gives you a couple of ideas and some confidence that you can pass with a couple of minor adjustments.

Good luck.

I`ll be coming up on this problem soon also. I was thinking of simply replacing the banjo bolt on the AFC with a plain one= no boost referenced fueling, that and turning the fuel screw in till it runs like a 1963 VW bug with 2 dead cylinders, lol. I plan on trying it out BEFORE my trip too the inspector tho. Funny thing, I`m also a NYS Inspector, but we don`t have the equipment at my job to do diesel... grrrr!

It's hard enough getting them to overlook the missing muffler, I don't know what would happen if it failed the emissions too. Maybe I'll leave it alone until after the next sticker.

I tested my truck when I did our fleet, it was under 5% opacity. We use the snap-idle test here in California. I don't know what New York does. If you are the person running the throttle, you can push it slower while still making them think you are stomping it. That can make a huge difference. We don't have to do our private light trucks in California yet, so that is nice.

I'd throw a tank of biodiesel in. Although my truck is stock, when I run the bio its impossible to lay any smoke down when I accelerate, plus it drops most emissions. If you're looking to drop opacity it just might be the ticket.

I have to go though soon and I'm sweating.

I went to a place in Bethlehem, Superior Automotive I think was the name of the place. I went there because they were the only ones close that would let me stand next to them while they did the test... I didn't want any dumbo other than me mashing the throttle.

The guy was really cool... he said he didn't believe in revving an engine that high... so he only revved it to about 1600 rpm.

He never looked under the truck... just stuck the sniffer up the pipe.

Now my 91 did not have to go on the rollers... it was a simple "snap test". And with the fuel pin rotated to "dog" position, I had almost zero opacoty.

I also went along for the ride when Vssman took his 96 thru at the sam e place. He disconnected his boost tube at the pump a block away from the place. He had to go on the rollers, but also had almost nothing for opacity. Again they did not look under the truck for a cat... actually I think Vssman's is mia like yours.

My son doesn't have a cat either... he's got the Rip system with the muffler.

If you ask me......

I actually had the guy putting the sticker on my truck here in Mass ask me if my truck needed to be tested for emissions. I said "Naw the truck is too old. " He wanted my opinion, I gave it to him!
