:) Bought a brand new Dodge Cummins 4x4 auto 2500 quad cab the other day. Started it up in the garage, garge door opened, turned the heater fan on and let it run for 10 mins. Fan sucked diesel exhaust in the cab, anyone know how to get that new smell back again?

Just air it out. If you want the new smell back many auto parts sell new car scent air fresheners. The new smell is mostly just the carpet, seats and plastic releasing manufacturing fumes, some people feel they aren't all that good for your health.

What you may actually be smelling is the blow by from the crankcase breather bottle. Many of us have removed the bottle and just extended the hose down to the track bar. The bottle is located right behind the fan, which sucks the oily mist up and into the engine compartment, soiling your new engine and getting into the cab when the vents are open.

I'll second Scott..............

My bet would be that your smelling the fumes from the blow-by bottle. Remove it now and you won't have to clean the mess later when you do. If you do a search it will turn up lots of threads on this topic.

Smell

A lot of new trucks smell at first, Dodge says its because of the oil they use. I started using Rotella in mine at first and would get a smell in the cab for a few hundred miles and it would go away. I changed to Delo oil, but allso relocated the blowby bottle mentioned above.

Diesel exhaust smell

Thanks for the replys, its exhaust fumes and it seems to be disapearing, i have noticed the smell from the vent bottle and it is entierly different, it has the smell of oil. I have heard from others that they can smell this after an oil change,i may reroute the vent pipe. Have 500 miles on it now, might remove the cat but have to find out if it affects the warranty, anybody know?

No need to worry about your warranty, your truck doesn't have a cat. They are only on pre '98. 5 trucks, what you may be seeing is a resonator.

I thought mine was fumes too.........

Honestly, your at 500 miles now and that's about when the smell starts to fade away. It is from the Blowby bottle. If you did an oil change it would be back. Go ahead and route it down to the track bar. 3/4" hose and a barb/barb connector and your done. Slight drip in the drive once in a while. After last 2 oil changes no more odors. :D :D

As far as removing the resonator you might end up with the dreaded drone. Good aftermarket exhaust system or a low restriction muffler and 4" tail pipe would be the way to go.

I had the blow-bye blues also, I've got 981/2 I took the muffler and tail pipe off long ago,put the resinator back on next to transmission, put a 4x4x4 wye on it then put dual stacks,it sounds so cool. about the blow-bye,take the hose off the front of the motor, put on a new hose run it up toward battery on drivers side, that way any moisture developing will drop back down, continue the hose toward firewall and down, run along frame and drop it down behind cab, no more water or odor. anyhow it works for me,good luck

Purpose?

New to this so bear with me...

What is the blow-by bottle and when you 'by-pass' it by running the hose back behind the cab what are the potential problems? Is this something DC would have a cow about and void warranty's over or is it a simple way to correct the "diesel perfume" from bothering occupants?

Brian (just another newbie)
