Diesel Fuel 101

This a service publication from Cummins. Since it is fairly recent (Sept 2002) and it speaks to fuel additives, I thought I would post the link here. I thought that the additives section was worthwhile as I know that folk are concerned about additives especially in the new engines.

Does anyone know if straight kerosene is acceptable as an alternate fuel in a pinch or if it need to be mixed with something (engine oil or a fuel additive) to not cause damage or if you're better off walking? I didn't see that answered in the article.

I work in a refinery and we make #1 kerosene, #1 diesel and aviation turbine fuel that we call ATF (not to be confused with automatic trans. fluid). We blend these products to meet the specifications of ATF which is the strictest. ATF has a very low smoke point, low freeze point < -40 F (pour) , sayboult color of 30 (water white or clear) and a PM flash of around 135 F compared to around 180 F on #2 diesel. In a pinch, I would use any of these products, look to see that the kero or #1 is not dyed to indicated that is non-taxed fuel as is off-road #2 (IRS no-no). It's very hard to dilute the red-dyed fuel since it only takes just under 4 lbs. of this dye to color 1000 gallons of fuel.
