Hey Guys,

I was at my local ags station the other day and they had 2 types of Diesel. One was for highway use and the other was for off-highway only. Does anyone know the difference? The attendant did not know. There was a price difference so I thought it may just be taxes but what to stop someone from putting it into there oh-highway truck?

John

I know in the diesel pumps back where I grew up (Maine) there's no difference between #2 diesel, #2 off highway diesel, and #2 home heating oil other than the price and the off highway and home heating are red in color.

If you are usuing your truck on a farm, it'd be fine to use. But get caught with off highway diesel in your tank on a road and it's a heafty fine, I think around 10,000.

I don't know about other states, but here in Oregon the difference is both price and sulfur content. I believe, based on odor, that the off road fuel is high sulfur (<5,000 PPM) versus on road which is low sulfur. The off road smells so good, I just wish I could run it in my truck.

Since there are no federal taxes collected on the off road the feds take a very dim view of it's use in highway vehicles. The fine can be as high as $10,000.

The price difference was $3. 14 for on road and $2. 64 for the off road here.

In NY the color is different in off road as well as furnace fuel, only difference is tax. Fines for using off road on road.

Same here in PA red for off road and big fine if they stick your tank and find red in it! Ken

I know my Dad filled the furnance in the garage with fuel oil before and it was clear, so I have to wonder if they don't always die it or something?

What we need to come up with is something to take the die out :D

Thanks guys. I thought it was a tax issue. I guess I will just use the on-highway fuel because I don't want to pay the fine!!

You don't have to add anything to it to get rid of the dye. Just put it in a clear container and set it in the sun for a few hours. The sun will bleach the red out of it. ;)
