Cummins powered Ford 250/350 HD

Has anyone been refused sale of diesel fuel?

Has anyone put in a diesel motor in a Jeep CJ7 or Wrangler? If so I would like to hear the facts.

I can't find the specific URL, but I have seen web sites that have posted information about Diesel swaps involving the Perkins Diesel. Adam Sparks used to have a link in his "Early Jeep CJ-5" page. As I recall the Perkins was a 2. 5 liter version. I don't think the Cummins ISB would fit. The front springs would get crushed. Maybe the 4 cylinder would be a good option? Makes it easy when you tow to a site, since you don't have to remember which nozzle to put in which vehicle. Personally, I prefer the Buick V-6 225 odd fire. It has the bottom end like a diesel.

It's do-able... There was a pic in FourWheeler (might of been 4wheel & Off-road) of a CJ-5 with a 4cyl Cummins at Moab. I've thought about doing this but the 3. 9L Cummins weighs something like 1000lbs - a little too much for the existing Jeep frame IMO. I'm going to stick with an AMC V-8 - probably go from my 304 to a 401 and call it good.

Brian, I was thinking about a 3. 9 in a cj-7 that I'm starting to build now. I'll probably just go with a 258 for fuel economy. I have a 401 in a '74 cj-5 with 35"Mud Terrains and 4" lift. That jeep is a lot of fun, but I'm contributing to OPEC's profits too much (about 10-11 mpg). I think the jeep would need some extra insulation to quite down the Cummins.

there was an article in JP or Peterson's off road not long ago [think about 3/4 months ?] about a 3. 9 in a CJ7. . very do able and the 3. 9 is not to heavy. . that 1000 # is the 5. 9 motor

I'm thinking maybe one of those VW diesels would fit, I would like to use one of the newer motors, common rail and all, but I bet the electronics would be a nightmare. Maybe one of the smaller Cummins would work, like the 3 or 4L engines. Next call is to Advance Adapters and see what they know.

so what does the 3. 9 weigh? I could of sworn that I read the 3. 9 is 1000# & the 5. 9 is pushing 1200# - show me the error of my ways, please. It would re-open the issue for me... .

I saw a Cummins-powered Jeep on display at the "Sandia Showdown" in New Mexico a few years ago.
Last spring, there was an event at Timberline Dodge in Portland, Oregon, and there was an Int'l Scout with 4-cyl Cummins on display.

What would the best source for a 3. 9 be? I don't have the project for it but am thinking about a TLC or CJ.

ok, the 4 wieghs in at 700lb, bout the same as a heavy bb chebby, all the mounting bolts are the same as our 6b's so trannys can be a bolt up deal, auto or stick, same with tcases. Places to look are people like Enterprize engines who sell used or new 4's, also the best place for a used are recked delivery type vans, this was a very common motor in them. You can get whole vans for under 2500 with good motors. The other thing to remember is some of these little 4's have a inline pump that is basically the same a our big P pump, that means power mods apply here.
good luck.

YES, I TO DREAM ABOUT PUTTING A 3. 9L IN MY FJ40 CRUISER. I KICKED IT AROUND FOR A WHILE BUT LAST YEAR I GOT A BRAND NEW 350 CHUBBY FROM GM DEALER BUT I WOULD GO DIESEL IN A HEARTBEAT. I KNOW THIS MOTOR COMES IN A LOT OF JCB BACKHOES AND SOME OTHER EQUIPMENT. THE ONLY QUESTION IS CAN YOU BOLT THE 3. 9L TO MY SM420 TRANS? I ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER--ADVANCED ADAPTERS!

I wish I would have done the 4 diesel instead of the 350 Chevy. I did the swap before a bought my Dodge, I thought diesels where slow. Now my truck will rip my Jeep "a new one", I thouhgt my Jeep was fast.

Anybody wanna buy a 80 CJ7 with a 4" SkyJacker lift, 33" BFG's, 96 Chevy irrigation motor(285-300 crate engine), SM465 trany with 6. 58 creeper 1st, AA adapter to the Dana 300, HD custom driveshafts, new Holley 600cfm, Headman headers with true dual exhaust all the way to the back inside the frame with super turbo mufflers? I've lost interest.

The Cummins Repower page has some good pics of Cummins in Scouts. There is also a message board, but replies are slow.

One point to remember is that you must use an engine that is EPA certified for on road use. Tractor and equipment engines are not certified and therefore are not 'legal' for use in on road vehicles.

I'm personally considering putting a 6AT 3. 4 in a Cherokee, but I need more information since it's REALLY tight in the height department as far as I can tell.

The specs on the 6AT are:
Length
35" from front of front pulley to rear of flywheel housing

Width
20" at widest point

Height
30" from bottom of pan to top of crossover tube

Weight
730 lbs dry

Back in 65 or so jeep came out with the Perkins 4 cyl diesel, factory. I too thought about putting a small diesel in my 49 willies, but thought it would be better to return it to the stock flat head 4.

What kind of RPM does the 3. 9 cummins turn? I have a '67 CJ5 that I put a 231 Buick V6 in it, and it is geared pretty low. Top speed with that motor is about 60mph and the motor was screaming! It is the civilian body on the old military chassis I think (81" wheelbase if I remember correctly). I like the idea of a 3. 9 swap in there, but if it doesn't turn any faster than the 5. 9s the old jeep would be really slow.

Well, R. E. , now that I think about it, 60mph was awfully squirrelly in that little jeep, so I don't need to go that fast anyway. But at a comfortable RPM sound from the engine, I was going about 35, which is pretty slow. I never did hook up a tach to see how fast the 3. 8 was turning, but it was loud!
