My buddy came over and wanted me to look at his lift pump that was leaking fuel. On inspection, found diesel dripping from the electrical connection on the bottom of the metal can. I don't know, but I don't think there is supposed to be diesel in the 'motor' windings and brushes right? Is it not sealed from the upper pump area? I think we were wondering over a beer when I grabbed my latest failed pump from the garbage can and cut it open with a reciprocating saw. Fuel was in the windings and on the brushes and covered every electrical part. This can't be normal. Any feedback on this?

It is normal. The pump motor runs in a fuel bath. The brushes wear and some say that is where the black tint on your used fuel filter comes from. The fuel helps to lube and cool the motor. Jake

That is my question, Is the gray in the filter normal?



My Mallory 110 didn't cause the fuel filter on my boat to contaminate like that.

If the system is rinsing the mettalic particles from the motor winding through the VP44, I'm more than a little concerned.

Should we be thinking of a magnetic trap for the fuel system?



an electrical motor cooled by diesel, DOES SOUND like a failure impending.

The only thing that should come from the motor is the carbon from the brushes or the brass? copper? from the armature. The filter should catch any particles that are big enough to harm the VP44. Most all efi gassers use an in tank pump that runs in a gasoline bath. The filters for a gas rig are not nearly as high a micron rating, so maybee the carbon passes through? That and being in the tank it could settle out and stay in the tank. As far as the Mallory 110, does it have the motor running in fuel? Jake
