Anybody got a common rail that is getting massive amounts of fuel in the oil? I`ve already been through the injectors & crossover tubes. No smoking guns. Anyone else seen this?

Never mind guys, I found it. # 5 injector is leaking, we couldnt see it when the truck was sitting there idleing, It wouldnt leak. BUT! when you take it to high idle, there is a spray so fine it looks like smoke coming from around #5. So there it is, the easy way to find leaking injectors. ;)

What do you mean a spray coming from around injector #5? A spray that you can see coming from the connector tube on the side of the head or you running it with the valve cover off?

Really. I would think that would get pretty messy with oil squirting every where. Not that much oil pressure up top?

It get's a little messy but when you're looking for problems... ... Besides, it's not as messy as setting the valves on a V8 with the valve cover off.

Glad to hear you found your trouble John. Did you have to buy a new injector? Set of injectors? Save that one?

Had one today. It filled the crankcase and was blowing out the breather. Changed the oil and with it idling you could see some small bobbles in the oil around #2. Stuck a finger in the oil, but it came out clean, no oil on my finger, just diesel. This one had an Edge on it, so don't know if that was a contributing factor or not. New injector on the way.

The one you just described, 03/04 or 04. 5/05? Most say the new 325 engine's injectors are more susceptible to this sort of thing. Is that what you have noticed on average or do you see just as many problems with the 03/04s?

AK, It seem i see more injector trouble in the 03/04, Probably just because they have more miles on them. Also see more trouble in the #5 injector. Heck for that matter we see alot of problems in the #5 cylinder.

In your personal opinion, are injector failures more common on trucks that are running/have run a fueling box?

Heck no!, we have 4 hot-shot rigs that get their work done here & we still see injector trouble out of 2 that dont run boxes. Mind you, we`ve never seen any of these 2 get fuel in the oil though. As far as I can tell, if you keep these isbe`s around 70 hp, you can work em with little trouble.

I spoke with Don M recently and he said he's seeing a lot of injector leakage on trucks that have been running high pressure boxes. Leakage meaning through the valve, not into the oil. Many of them were sent to him to work on and the owners were not even aware they had been leaking

Whats leaking on that type of leak is a check ball that is out of round, found it by accident. Had a injector tore down & the check ball took off rolling accross the table & there it was,The check ball had a little wobble in it.

The injector he was speaking of were sent to him for upgrading. Honeing, new nozzles, something of the sort. The truck owners didn't know they had a problem, either there were no symptoms or they just weren't apparent. I don't know the specifics of how the valve works or in what way they begin leaking. I assume he has a way of pop testing them.

I think that little check ball is a major source of problems with these injectors. Seems like people are reporting injectors being stuck open due to debris at the ball, and now John points out problems can happen if it's a bit out-of-round. Not good.
