Diesel Lowering In Price

Hello all:



I am not sure if this is a good place to put this thread, but since I own a 2007 6. 7, I figured maybe some of my fellow 6. 7 owners might be able to offer some input on this.



As we all know, diesel is coming down in price, and at my local Pilot service center, the price is down to $3. 53 a gallon as of tonight for ULSD.



I gotta tell you, I have really been thinkin' hard about buying a 500 gallon tank and loading her up if ULSD hits at or below $2. 00-$2. 50 a gallon.



Gas is dropping a bunch, and diesel should follow suit for at least a little while. China suspended imports of diesel fuel for the last three months because they say they have all they need right now. This should help diesel drop a good bit in price.



Secondly everybody is screaming that world demand for all petroleum products has dropped a bunch, and shows now signs of picking up as the world enters into global economic stagnation.



Heard today that OPEC was moving up their emergency meeting to discuss lowering ouput. Meeting was scheduled for November 18th, but they moved it up to the 24th of October after oil crashed today at less than $70. 00 a barrel.



The good news is, many oil economists think that the emergency meeting OPEC will have will actually cause oil prices to drop lower. They cite a lot of reasons, but mainly they think oil consumption will still continue to drop, and reducing output is not going to help that.



Anyhow, I am thinking of getting a 500 gallon tank and loading her up if the price goes right. How long do you guys think the fuel could stay fresh?



What type of bulk additive would you recommend for keeping the fuel fresher longer. I assume they make some sort of fuel freshener like "Sta-Bil" for diesel? Anybody know what that might be called?



Anybody know where I can get a decent 500 gallon tank and not pay an arm and a leg for it? I can get a 500 gallon tank for about $1300. 00 new with pump and all, but I would like to see if I can find one used somewhere.

From their website... I use the stuff periodically and I am fairly sure it says ok for diesel on the bottle:

The factors around the world that drive the cost of diesel fuel at the pump are too complex for me to predict. The only thing I know with certainty is the fundamental factor that effects the price of all commodities which is supply and demand. Specifically worldwide supply and demand for crude oil and US supply and demand of gasoline and diesel fuel.



Personally, I think it would be risky to become a small-time diesel fuel speculator. The costs to install your own tank would be significant and if you bet wrong, buy at the wrong time, you'll spend a lot of money for no gain at all and possibly a big loss. I don't know if you can even buy and store that much fuel without coming under the scrutiny of state bureaucrats.



With uncertainty about the outcome of the US presidential election hovering over everything we do and stock markets around the world reacting in a very volatile manner we could be entering a recession and that will mean a reduction of demand for crude oil and diesel fuel. If Americans quit buying products in stores, trucking will slow and so will the demand for diesel fuel. The price could continue to drop.



It is possible but I don't think we are going to see the price of diesel fuel drop to $2 or $2. 50 per gallon. OPEC is likely to take steps to reduce world supply of crude oil to increase the price and we are now moving into the winter months where the additional demand created by the need for home heating oil in the northeastern US always increases the price of diesel fuel.



Even if the price of diesel fuel does drop into the high $2/gallon range and you buy in quantity the cost of buying and installing a 500 gallon tank and pump will increase your actual price per gallon beyond the retail price at the pump. Divide the $1300 estimated cost by 500 gallons and that becomes very expensive fuel. Then if the price of diesel remains low or even dips lower after you fill your tank you bet wrong and lost a lot of money.



Speculating in commodities is risky. I wouldn't do it.

I have to speculate in propane fuel every year, as do alot of other people.



I contract for 700 gallons of propane every year for home heating. And I spent $1500 on a tank to be buried. Mind you that's a propane tank.



Everything is a gamble now a days. Either it will or it won't. You could always buy the tank now and just fill it up with 100 gallons and watch your local market prices to determine if you want to fill more.

I would imagine that you could have the diesel delivered if the tank was installed with permits. (more expensive) That way you could get diesel cheaper no matter what the prices are due to bulk rate.

Annother thing if you don't keep your tank full you will get a lot of condensation in the tank and that is not good.

I was thinking of putting some stabil in the tank to keep the fuel fresher longer, then running an electric pump with a water separator/fuel filter attached to keep the water doen to a minimum.



I wonder if most 500 gallon diesel tanks have separate vents open to the atmosphere, if they somehow self vent through the pump nozzle as you pump the fuel into your truck.



I would feel better about condensation if they had at least some sort of regulation to keep what air is in the tank there for there whole time. If air is allowed to free-flow through the tank, then I can see having a lot of troubles with water condensation.



I am not sure if I need to get a permit for my tank or not. I know the farm folks never messed around with permits. They just have the oil companies come and fill up their heating oil tanks and diesel tanks at the same time!!!!!



I would think if I had the tanks in town, some type of permit would be necessary. But then again, I am not sure about that either.

How about 55 gallon drums. I am thinking also of this idea. I would get steel drums, as I hear some people say plastic is not ideal for petro diesel products.



I know they keep diesel in 55 gallon barrels, how about that idea?



I wonder how sucessful you would be in keeping gasoline in a 55 gallon barrel as well?

I have a fuel trailer I built approx. 5 years ago. I bought a trailer and the 12 v. pumps and meters... . can,t remember how much. I have one tank holds 110 gal. gas & 1 that holds 280 gal. diesel . I have a backhoe and several diesel mowers ,a Gator diesel,and 3 diesel trucks I can't say that i save any money on the fuel ... but it is a dream to know I have fuel at any given time and then some to spare. My employees used to fill my lawn trucks up 1 mile away from my house/ shop and it was always something either filling up their wifes mini van or abusing my charge acct. for cigs. etc. ... now we fill up here atmy shop which has cameras every where . No more fun for the crews at the convenience store.

This past sunday I bought 500 ppm (LSD) on I-26 in South Carolina

just south of Charlotte at exit 73, for $2. 68 per gal, cash. Credit

card was $2. 76 per gallon.



on Wednesday Oct. 22 it was $2. 98 per gal.



500 ppm cost much less to produce. They had about 8 or 10 pumps

for LSD and only 1 pump out behind the building for ULSD fuel.



This was an EXON truck stop.



My truck averaged 22. 7 miles per gallon roundtrip Jacksonville to

Lynchburg and return. traffic was heavy both ways, running 70 mph

and less, mostly less, with out A/C most of the trip.
