Read many discussions concerning oil, types, weights, etc. I am curious, however, of the differences between diesel oil vs. oil that is put into gasoline engines. Does anybody have any info or know of a place to get that info. Just curious.
Different additive packages. Like Joe said, there's tons of literature on it. You don't see soot control additives in gasser oil, for example. I'm sure there's many more.
The main differences are in the additives. The API has lowered the allowable levels of zinc and phosphorus because it can kill cats early. Manufacturers are required to build an emmisions control system that can last to 150k, thus the recent lowering of zinc and phos. Both are under 900ppm for the new SM specs. Diesel oil also has more calcium for soot control. Moral of the story is you can run HDEO (heavy duty engine oil) in your gasser but you shouldn't run PCEO (passenger car eo) in your diesel. Bobistheoilguy is a forum dedicated to engine oil. There is a lot of good info there and used oil analysis of all types of oil. Oh and welcome to TDR
Diesel oil contains more "detergents" to clean you engine. The particles cleaned up by the detergents are then trapped by the filter, leaving clean oil. "regular" oil contains less detergents and will run out of them sooner and thus need changing more often. You can run any diesel oil in a gas engine, assuming same grade is used, but you shouldn't run gas oil in a diesel engine.
This is just what I've been told. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
