Diesel or gas truck?

Thanks, TDR Staff

As of 12/10/13, I am no longer a Cummins owner :(

Little diesel engine in my shop.

A close friend of mine is considering at purchasing a new 3500 crew cab with a dump body. The truck will be towing a 10,000 pound equipment trailer all day long but making any where from 25-30 stops a day. He runs a lawn care business and his average total miles traveled in any given day is only around forty miles. He plans on keeping the truck for at least ten years. He presently has two F350's with gas motors, I'am trying to put him in a new Ram, I just don't know if the 6.7 is really made to go 10- 15 minutes shut her down, start it after 30-45 minutes and repeat it over a ten to twelve hour work day.Any suggestions would be appreciated, Frank

I dont think that kind of life is good for any of the diesel engined Pickups. Although the DEF engine would handle it better than the 2012s and older.

I think he would be much better off with a gas truck. It seems like the described duty cycle would not let the emission system run the regeneration process properly and would eventually have costly issues not to mention the downtime for his business.

Today gasoline was 0.87 cents cheaper than diesel fuel at the local fuel station. It is getting tougher to justify the extra cost of a diesel engine for the average person.

I agree, he is probably a candidate for the 3500 with hemi engine. Yes, the DEF approach helps the diesel a lot, but he is at lower speeds, low altitude, short trips, etc.

Thanks guys, we've been looking for the past few days. All of the c&c trucks we've seen have the 6.7 in them, may have to order a hemi.
