Saw one on a Arab Emirates ship. The small boat was used for line tending. Mercury experimented with diesel outboards a few years ago but the weight issue could never be effectively dealt with. Yanmar solved the problem.

I have seen two of them ( 27 hp I think) in operation. They are on the Block Island pumpout boats and they have been running them for 5 or 6 years at least. They get lots of time on them, mostly low speed and idle as they run around the harbor doing their thing. They use almost nothing for fuel.

I didn't think they were available anymore due to emissions.

I saw several outboard diesels in Haites back in the early 80's. They used to run them on Kerosene.

My Mecury 25 wt. is 94 lbs. they're 27 hp is 207lbs. That is still managable but would'nt be pulling it off and throwing it in the the back of your truck as often.

Mercury had one for the Military to run on JP-5.
