Diesel Power Mag: 2012 Ram review

Although I have a subscription to this magazine, I had to buy this issue at B&N yesterday.

Per the article, the new 2013 Ram will:

• Tow more than any other 1-ton
• Have more torque ever (850 lb-feet)
• Have the largest rear-gears at 11. 8 inches
• Tow 23,000+ pounds
• Chev & Ford should fear this truck

What do you think? Sadly, I can't link to any online article from the magazine.

The actual numbers (payload and gvcw) will not be released till the truck is released to avoid the horsepower type wars we saw between ford and chevy a few years back

I got my magazine about a week ago with the title 2013: Rise OF RAM. There was an editorial from one of the editors that stated; Is Brand loyalty Blind Loyalty? His final comment was and I quote. “What a shame that so many people will dismiss this truck before ever taking the time to consider it. ”
The only thing that I will comment on is the estimated selling price of $62,000 for a 3500HD Cummins. That is double in price what my first house cost me in 1972 when we built the house new on a ½ acre lot.

The only thing that I will comment on is the estimated selling price of $62,000 for a 3500HD Cummins. That is double in price what my first house cost me in 1972 when we built the house new on a ½ acre lot.

Definitely not cheap. My current rig was priced (MSRP) at $73k. .

Well that's it. Im priced out. I'm just glad I was able to get my sig truck at a good deal, and I got a death grip on that. I'm not liking what the whole diesel scene has become. Not practical at all unless you have a specific application for it.

Former US Army, current CIO/CTO (technology & management stuff). I am looking forward to seeing the body styles for the 2013 Mega/Dually's. I hate the elongated rear quarter panels and am hopeful they will offer the 2013 model in the small dually/rear panel as my current rig.

Its not what I do... is how one saves money...

Bought current truck in 06 and got a good deal, had my own financing, did not carry a balance from previous truck. Paid truck off in mid 09. . Kept making payments to myself ever since into a seperate savings account. I will not play games with salesmen/dealerships. Someone will want to make a sale and will sell me one on my terms... Will be able to put down about half... .

I read that quote as well and while the price certainly is a hard pill to swallow, the quote kind of burned me a little bit. Sure Dodge has had its issues over the years nobody can deny that. But when you compare them to Fords and Chevys issues, how bad has the Ram really been? OK so they havent been at the forefront of the horsepower war in several years. Well when you look at Chevy theyve changed the engine design of the Duramax 3 or 4 times because of failures they were seeing at higher mileage. And theres not been a class action lawsuit brought on to Dodge like with the 6. 0.

For the most part, Dodge has built a truck year in and year out that has decent fuel mileage, good power, and overall delivered a reliable platform. There certainly seems to be a higher number of high mileage Rams running around compared to either Fords or the Chevys. So what is to be "dismissed" about the Ram? That just struck a cord in me.

I read it a little different. My take was that many have written off the Dodges as inferior (except the Cummins part) in fit, finish and overall quality. I must admit that I am a former Dmax and Ford owner and I had every intent to buy a new 6. 7 Ford because we have had several over the years that held together better than the chevs or dodges. (Pre-2001) We dropped by the Ram dealer on the way home from failed negotiations on a Stuperduty and were pleasantly surprised at how well the Ram rode, drove, the interior comfort, and the price compared to the others. Needless to say we bought it and have so far been happy with everything except the fuel economy. I am hoping it will get better as it breaks in.

MSRP and selling price are two different things. Such as I bought my 08 Mega cab 2500HD truck new in Nov 07 for $38K +tax the MSRP was $49,060 + Tax. I felt that this was a fair price and bought the truck. This price was with no trade-in vehicle and no dealer financing.

My current truck had a MSRP of 52,450. 00... ... ..... I paid 42,500. OTD. I purchased it in 2011 after the 2011's came out.

Yep, that's the secret... saving your money! I don't make payments to anyone but myself and purchase vehicles paying in full from that account. No wasting time playing games in the F&I office either. I learned to do that over 40 years ago working on commission with the company paying me mileage. I watched fellow salesmen spend their car allowance every month and after about three or four years they had a worn out vehicle and no money to buy a replacement.

When talking about cost, don't forget resale value. I saw a 2003 QCLB 6-speed for sale earlier this year for $20,500 with 160K miles on the clock. What do you think the equivalent Ford (if it was still running) or Chevy would sell for?

True. . I have had two seperate offers of 32 and 33. 5K for my 06 dodge...
But it is going to get put in the shop between the Kubota and the boat. . I will do something with it eventually... . maybe give it to a grandson...

Yep... Im sure I do not have all the $$$ to outright purchase a new 2013-2014 Laramie Longhorn H. O. in cash. . but I have enough to where I won't have over about 18-24 months of comfortable payments before it will be paid for!.
Right now I am currently abusing NTB (Citibank) Cash price on 4 new tires was 900. 60 out the door... Noticed the "12 months no interest PLUS a $50. 00 Visa Card" OAC... Ok, sure, I'll use your money for 30-60 days, until I get the gift card in... then pay the tires off and cancel the card!!. . 850. 60 for 4 new tires!!
