Last weekend I went out and bought a new 2006 Ram 2500 Mega Cab with a Cummins Turbo Diesel, mainly to tow my track car. I have read all of the posts on how to break in the engine and have dutifully put 400 hundred miles on the truck. I notice that certain time I get a strong raw diesel odor, (like when you went down the basement when you were a kid). It usually happens (not every time) when I come to a stop sign or when I get the mail at the bottom of the driveway. It always goes away when I shut off the motor. There are no spots on the driveway. Could you give me your thoughts on this?

Thanks

I would guess what you smell is new oil rather than diesel. I always smell it right after an oil change. Fresh oil stinks, especially synth.

Standard Feature, nothing to worry about, my 05 did it, my 06 does it!

FYI, dont idle it for a long time when new, drive easy until the water temp's come up (always), let it idle / cool down for a minute or so after towing (to cool the turbo down), get on it on the freeway once in a while to clean it out, search on "vent mod"... . and you can get an extra 4+ galons of diesel in the tank... .

I personally highly recommend a drop in air filter replacement and to replace the muffler with a MBRP or similiar... . very inexpensive, moderate sound, turbo spools a tad faster, lower egt's, wont void warranty and get a few extra ponies...

My 2004. 5 smells like raw diesel from in the cab at times and never figured it out. I only smell it when I am driving and it isn't after draining the water seperator.

Glacier Diesel Power is a great company and I would highly reccomend them for some of your diesel needs. Here is the vent kit that Giachino was talking about:

I started with a K&N drop in air filter for my 04. 5. it gave me a . 5 mpg increase while towing increase spool up and such. This is by far the biggest air filter you can fit into the stock box (stock like 3" deep, K&N 7 or 8" and barely fits). I finally changed it out for an AFE stage 2 once I learned more about diesel and realized it was the best money could buy giving the most increase in power and MPG. I gained 2 mpg towing the exact same load over the K&N drop in filter. I also got alot quicker spool up and decreased EGT's and all my buddies (and my brothers buddies when I took him to school the next day) thought I had a new turbo on my truck.

I personally installed a straight pipe on my truck to get me by til I could afford or needed a complete exhaust system. I gained 3 mpg with that on the same exact route almost the exact same throttle each time just going to and from work before there was any traffic (1 hour away).

When my 05 did that, it was the high pressure pump. There were no spots on the ground. I found the raw diesel with a flashlight. There were droplets on the bottom of the pump, accumulating in/on wiring harness there.

The pump was leaking. The dealer replaced the pump and the smell and droplets disappeared.

If its cold where you live, it is probably the CP3 weeping fuel. If it starts leaving drips on the ground it is a problem. Otherwise they seem to quit leaking when it warms up.
