There are actually quit a few Jeeps out there with 4bts in them, there is a company doing the swaps commercially. Don't have the link, but I saw them selling one on Ebay once... Looked pretty sweet. Though, the guy might be a magician to get a powerstroke in a CJ7, why would you? Kinda like making a Playmate disappear, why would you want to do that either;)
 
Diesels off road do a lot better than gassers. A lot more torque down low, at around 1400-1600 rpm where most of the work is done. Also, automatics seem to work alot better, less worry about the gear and more attention to the current trail. Diesels use about 1/4 the fuel of a gasser counterpart, but the big advantage is the torque.



Rent a 6cyl Jeep Rubicon with manual on mountain trails and it becomes real apparent, you'll want a diesel automatic.



Yes, but my 93XJ with that gasser 5 speed will run CIRCLES around my truck (both stock suspensions).



Snow, heh. My truck's most dangerous in comparison to my jeep in a few inches of snow.

Your Cummins diesel will deliver about 3x the torque of a gas jeep on most trails. That means even torque delivery without breakage.



Most of the trails i run I can do in half the time of a typical jeep.



Of course you know, most trails are the driver and the truck, not the motor.

On Snow, my biggest beef with my truck is the rear when wants to come around and try to the pass the front. I attribute this to 70% of the dead weight on the front and the rear when with little traction.



Off road, Rolling hills and tall grass I have had to use 4wd (low in some cases!) to get anywhere, even with 3/4 of the bed filled with firewood. Stuff my jeep could do in 2wd easily. Tho maybe them nitto's just suck :)



However, I have not had much off road with the truck and don't intend to.



It's been a few years with out my poor jeep. I hope to try to get it to Minnesota this winter. This up and coming weekend I plan on firing up the motor for the first time in 2 years and fixing that brake problem as well. Hope the rear end doesn't brake on me. :)

I probably misread your post. The Cummins is a great powerplant, delivering boatloads of torque at low rpm, making it the ideal motor for slowspeed navigation. The 48re and NV271 are pretty good as well with the NV271 having being the best at torque handling amongst tcases.



The Ram having solid axles and a very low diff isn't real good at tough terrain.

Bigger tires don't alleviate the low pumpkin in the middle. The wheel wells dont support real large tires without raising the CG via a body or suspension lift.



Finally the approach and departure angles make it difficult to climb or avoid body damage.



I have a Ram but installed the Cummin HPCR in an off-road vehicle.

It performs well.





Agreed, mostly stock CTD shouldn't go off road, 4x4 is to get outa the driveway if it's wet :)



I know even in off roading, a 50/50 balance is desired. How does adding an additional 800-ish pound over a front axle work out vs the stock motor?
 
I know what you mean about a good driver making everyone else look bad. I went up to the top of a 7000' peak last month with the local jeep club to do some road repairs. The road up has at least a dozen switch backs and lots of loose rocky climbs.



The trailing vehicle was an older Ford 7. 3 crewcab. Most of us couldn't make alot of the switchbacks in one turn but this guy was on the radio telling the jeeps to hurry up or get out of the way.



Wish I could of been back there to see him manuver that thing. Found out he builds and drives a monster truck.
