Diesel tuning and operating theory book?

Hey all,



I'd like to know if there is a good, relatively modern, book about diesel engine tuning and such. Something that includes common rail-specific stuff would be great but I have a feeling that's not available.

There's a lot of information on here and some awesome people but I can't just ask every question there is to be asked on here. There's got to be some books out there, maybe training lit from Cummins or Cat or something?!?

If you've got a decent engineering background, I recommend the 2-volume series by Charles Fayette Tayor entitled "The Internal Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice". This is a dated work (the discussion on common rail injection is confined to systems with cam-operated injectors at constant timing), but it gives an excellent foundation. It's easy to jump from there to modern diesel operating theory. Modern control theory is a little harder to jump to, since Taylor's books are pretty much confined to mechanical control.



I recommend www.sae.org for modern information. Search for publications (papers) on Diesel engines. They're pricey, so get them from your local library on loan.



I also like the NACA technical reports server for fuels information ( http://naca.larc.nasa.gov/ ), again just search on "Diesel".
