Weight has much to do with it. The angle of the bar between them has a lot to do with it. The steamer was effectively lifting the diesel, thus cancelling its traction. Reverse that angle and the results would've been different.

An engine making 18HP at 10RPM puts out almost 10 000 ft-lb torque.

It's also a V8 diesel, and we all know there isn't much torgue there! :-laf Plus I saw that it was only in 2wd, and the steamer had a full head of steam on, it was venting at the beginning of the video.

Back to back hitch pulling does not prove anything at all. As mentioned a steeper hitch angle and gross weight will ALWAYS win such a contest. I would have to assume that the little green V-8 tractor would weigh in at less than 9,000# while the steamer will easly be double that .. A proper analogy would be if a 300# linebacker from Green Bay Packers had a tug of war with your 60# 12 year old daughter.. This might be interesting to watch but we really did NOT learn anything useful.

Yep, may be a funny show, but doesn't prove anything and that little green V-8 tractor isn't a real farm tractor.

Of course, we all know it doesn't prove anything but seeing the old steam powered equipment reminds us of just how fast technology has developed in the last century.

FWIW, we managed to attend a steam and old tractor / engine show in Cumming, GA. in November and I was just blown away with all the equipment in attendance. Very interesting to say the least.

We have a good antique equipment club in the county I live in. The large steam engine we have on permanent display is a 600hp Corless. The flywheel is more than 20' in diameter.
