Bio Diesel+Cold Weather=Cheaper Fuel???

help on biodiesel/WVOs????

As great as it sounds on paper, I personally do not feel Diesel Secret is an adequate viable alternative and I would caution anybody who chooses to use this as a fuel in their truck. I have also included a little info on running straight veggie oil as fuel.

I'll save you the cost to to buy the Diesel Secret book:

"Basically the manual tells you to buy a Walmart plastic garbage can a couple of pumps and a couple of household water filters, hoses and fittings. Install a Goldenrod filter in one for water removal and wa-lah your system is ready. Actually you also add Kerosene (10% ratio), unleaded gasoline (5% ratio), some Diesel-Kleen+Cetane boost and the magical/miracle potion (DSE) and then pump in your tank. Its pink in color and smells somewhat like paint thinner.

It also has a chart stating that it is good to 30 degrees. Add 5% more kerosene for every 10 degrees colder. Blow is the mixing ratio.

20gal filtered WVO, 2gal Kerosene, 1gal unleaded gas, 15oz Power Service+Centane boost additive, 3. 5oz of DSE mix slowly for 5 minuets and put it in the tank. "

That sounds pretty scientific to me

If you do a search on "White Spirit" you might also find some interesting info in regards to another "special" additive  for WVO to burn effectively as a diesel fuel.

This excert is taken from the University of Idaho:

"Some individuals have interpreted the research done at the University of Idaho on use of Raw Vegetable Oils as diesel fuel replacements as an endorsement for this practice. While we think there is some opportunity in particular cases, those contemplating this practice should be aware that most research with raw vegetable oils have shown reduced engine lilfe due to polymerization in the ring belt area and in some cases lubricating oil thickening, reduced bearing life or even sudden catastrophic failure. "

Here is an excellent paper written by the folks at the university of Idaho in regards to running Veggie oil as fuel:

There is a ton more info available but this should be a good starting point for anyone interested in learning more about these topics.

A word of caution..........

If youre worried about the notorious "tank dippers", you WILL get some red dye from adding Kero.

The WVO/Biodiesel is looking better and better every day.

In regards to Raw Veg Oil... would refined veg oil from Costco be considered RVO?

Or is Raw Veg Oil unrefined? The reason I ask is that I looked at a 15. 88 Kg bucket of refined veg oil at Costco the other day thinking, Hmmmmmm!

Does anybody know if adding a bucket or two of refined veg oil to the tank would cause "reduced engine life"?

All that long study did was compare different mixtures of pure oil to #2

With the mixture in the packet, as well as the filtering, the kerosene, and the fuel treatment along with their Secret stuff, whatever it is, thats how they make some money I guess but show me a study where this kind of mixture was put into practice and studied then I will take it seriously... .

Apparenty in the site, Eroupeans have been doing this for a long time so if it works, then great!... ... It's just the "Bio-Diesel" craze is seen as the best thing and people are blind that ... "Oh no, there is nothing else that will work"... . how do they know, most of these guys who do this are hicks... . On the Utah bio-diesel site, look here

These guys don't even have breathing protection!!

here is the home page for that place.....

http://www.utahbiodiesel.org/

you know, even if you do like a 20% mixture, at todays prices that saves . 46 less the cost of making it which is . 10 at the 20% ratio... . but anyway, I will give this a shot and try it... . If it works, it works and I will post my observations... .

rrausch,

As long as the oils is not HYDROGENATED or (shortening) oil I think it would be OK but the packet in the deisel secret says to use WVO... Maybe the oily Gunk is used out of it when used as a fryer and you filter the food junk off.....

Well, they must have had 6-7 different types of veg oil at Smart & Final--I looked there too. They had cottonseed, peanut, soy, canola, a hard cube of mixed veg & lard, a tub of hydrogenated oil (looked solid too), and plain old veg oil. The veg oil was the cheapest. It was about $3 a gallon with no taxes since grocery stores in Cal. don't tax food. I was thinking if #2 goes way up out here, I'd just buy some $3 veg oil at Costco and pour it in! But I'd hate to ruin my injection pump... know what I mean?

On what site? The Diesel Secret site? Of course they are going to say it is great and everyone else across the world has been using it forever, they are selling and profiting from the product.

There are other products similar, if not identical, to Diesel Secret. With a little investigation, and looking at the MSDS, you will find out that it is not much of a secret.

Mixing SVO with gas, kero, "diesel secret", and fuel additives does nothing more than thin the mixture. It is not chemically changing the SVO hence the relation to burning WVO.

Sure it burns, so does WVO.

I agree a 20% mixture of WVO and #2 would be a good idea to try and save a few bucks. I sure wouldn't mess around with making "Diesel Secret" fuel to mix at 20% with #2.

I thought I would bring this point back to the top because I see a lot of thread about running straight WVO. The above link has some good info.

OK, I am still in the process of getting parts together, This is a crude drawing, but I thought everyone would like to see what I am planning.

I am making a portable mixing and transfer barrel for the Diesel secret product. It looks like this is going to be totally portable and closed and such

#ad

This is a 30 gallon barrel that is closed save for 2, 2" bung openings on the top... It is sitting on a cross dolley to move around, I am going to drill at the bottom, put a nipple there with a shut-off valve, pipe it up to the same Pump seen on the Bio sites, then go to the water filters (haven't gotten yet)... I saw some filters housings that have the bypass valve on them so I use that for mixing the contents with the pump, up the sight hose, then turn the valves and filter it..... When done, roll up the cord for the pump, push out to truck and pump in by hand by the other thing on the top, has a 8' hose and nozzle.

So what do you think?

I know of 2 people that are running WVO that is from local restaurants. One is a powerstroke, the other a duramax. Strained and filtered, then installed. The powerstroke has been doing this now for 2 years, the duramax just started it a few weeks ago.
