Well, I checked my new '04's rear third member's oil level. I stuck my little finger in and felt 1/4" below the fill hole. No oil. I started adding oil. It took a whole QUART to get it up to 1/4" below the hole. I'm glad I hadn't put any load on it, yet.

One question for all you oil "experts. " Why can't someone make a gear oil that doesn't stink? I REALLY hate the smell of it and always have. It seems as if the synthetics at least could be formulated to work sans odor. What gives?

there was talk over on the dieselpage forums [gm's] about a new full syn. 75w90 gear oil that gm sells that they nick named "goofy grape" . they say it sorta smells like grape and iirc, it is purpley in color... avalable from gm dealers if they have it is stock, but the price was way high [like $27 usd per quart]

at 10 bucks a quart if they short us all a quart that is a real nice Christmas bonus for DC Management.

Plus it keeps the part guys busy!

BTW my 03 was low by 1 1/3 quarts

My 03 diff started a slight whine around 6k . Found fluid level 1 qt low , filled to specs in owners manual but have a 60-70 whine when ring & pinion is in float condition.

Did you use full synthetic? These axles require it.

Sorry for the delayed reply. I was out exploring in my Jeep.

Anyway, yes, I used synthetic GL-5 75W-90 gear oil that smelled just as bad as the dino gear oil I've used for years in other vehicles.
